Oil + Coolant = :(

As you say, drainng the oil is simple.

To completely drain the coolant, you'll need to:

1. Remove the crossover cap.
2. Drain the radiator. The drain is on the lower passenger side of the radiator.
3. Drain the block. There are two plugs on either side of the block (circled in red in the first pic).
4. Flush the system by putting a hose in the coolant crossover while leaving both the radiator and block drains open.

Then remove the 4 bolts (2nd pic, circled) holding the adapter to the block, and change the gasket.

Put everything back, fill the fluids, and cross your fingers. ;)

The hardest part is keeping the new Adler in place when you put the adapter back on. If you don't have any tack glue, I just put a bolt through the adapter, hung the gasket on the bolt, then used a socket and extention to hold the bolt in place while I hand screwed the bolt to the block. Once you get one bolt started loosely, you just rotate the gasket to the correct position and put in the rest of the bolts.

The one time I did this, I found it easy to use a 1/4" 13(?)mm wobbly socket and a 8" 1/4" extention.

Ok... so, the CE isn't majorly leaking from the oil filter, it's a little moist but not bad, the CE seems to be leaking from the trans filler tube... another super fun thing to fix...

the grey car... is totally leaking from the oil filter, and you can see it's leaking both oil and coolant.

Question #1... if it was also a head problem, would the car still be running as well as it does?

Quetstion #2... does anyone who lives around me (Joe, Eric, Dom, anyone else) wanna help me fix this stuff.

let me know what you think of the pics...
(I don't know what this white goo is...)

and is this the spot where I can get to the bolt through the wheel well?

I've heard that white goo called mayonaise.:)

That describes it well. That's what you get when you mix oil and coolant in an engine. It's like foamed oil.

If your adaptor plate gasket is leaking oil and coolant, it's probably swapping the fluids too.

Check for the mayo after you change the adaptor gasket and fluids.:)

When you fix the adapter, drain the oil and replace...... also drain - replace the coolent! Back flush the coolent system..... then fill with hose water..... (some say to use distilled water from grocery store). Run it around town and open road until it gets to normal operating temp and take it home and drain all the crap (coolant)again - just drain fromlower rad hose. If it looks clean when draining, refill with coolent thru crossover tube. It shound them be 50% water, 50% antifreeze. Runit around until hot, let it cool and continue to top it off with 50/50 mix until all the bubbles are gone.

I actually used purple power and simple green in my wifes old car to clean out the coolant system. It had a blockage in the heater core. I drove it around and let it run in the driveway for a bit. Then I drained it and ran some tap water for a bit to flush. It took care of the problem!

Yea im down for it. Give me a call, let's see if we can figure out a tine to do it.

Excellent... :D

I'm pretty much good whenever you are free... I might have to be in NY on Fri, but I haven't heard for sure yet...

BTW, order me another set of those headlight protectors :D
(and if you don't mind, maybe you can install the set I have)

Yeah count me in as well sir. Im off tuesday at 08:00 and have wed and thursday off but have friends coming on Wed night. Probably best either on Tuesday after work @ 08:00 or Wed before my friends make it down. For me anyway. :D

I had a bad feeling when the coolant was boiling out during our little stop over in Queens. Thats never a good sign. That white stuff and the oil in the coolant is all bad. :( Coolant in the oil is obviuosly worse though.

Q: these 4.6 DOHC motors prone to head gasket leaks and or cracked blocks? I thought they were pretty bulletproof?

+1 on the head light protectors sir. If you havent already ordered them.

They are not "prone" to head gasket leaks nor cracked blocks, but they are not "bulletproof" either. But after all, we have some of the oldest 4.6L DOHC modular engines there are.

Tuesday works for me, I'd rather try and get this done sooner then later...

Eric, wanna play hooky from work on Tues? :D
(or set a new record Milford to Cape Cod, when work is done)

I dont mean they cant be broken but in my experience there are just some engines that almost never have certain issues, such as head gaskets. I'm sure its possible but hopefully for Joe's sake its not. :D

I def can't take the day off of work, too much going on, as much as I would like to take a mental health day. This coming weekend already is looking pretty booked. Then its July 4th weekend.......maybe the second I could?

Joe B is my hero... :D

So the grey car seems to be all set :D :D :D

that gasket was all sorts of messed up

Nice! You flush out your coolant and change the oil?
We did. It wasnt bad at all really. Didnt look like there was any coolant in the oil. No milkiness or brown. Just regular oil.

Does it "hold the mayo"?:D
No more mayo. Maybe some mustard though...
I think Joe lucked out. No head gaskets in the near future.

Just so people know, Joe cooks a mean ass steak on the grill. Wonder if a grill would fit in his room at Carlisle next year...
