Oil + Coolant = :(

So, the grey car is mixing it's oil and coolant...

There is clearly oil floating on the coolant reservoir along with some white stuff?

And when you check the oil, it leaves a greenish tint on the cloth...

What should I be looking for?

The car overheated on the way to Carlisle (at least it belched out a little bit of coolant from the tank)

but otherwise it's running just fine...

Thoughts?

Yes Joe, they both pass thru the spot where the oil filter adapter is, and that would be the spot where the mix.

How much Oil are we talking about here ? Adapter gasket will allow some mixing, but it would be very small amounts.

First, DON'T start the car again! Coolant in the oil will wipe out the bearings.

Then completely drain both the oil and coolant (you'll need to pull the block drain plugs and flush the system), change the oil filter and the adapter gasket, refill, and pray.

If it was me, I'd change the oil and filter again right after I warmed up the engine.

If they still mix, then you're really screwed (head gasket, cracked block, etc.).

he drove it all the way to PA like that probably

and back from PA...

and then to NYC and back at the beginning of the week...

when I was down in NY, I got the low coolant warning which is when I noticed the oil...

It was only low just enough to trip the sensor, the 200+ mile trip back it lost only a little coolant in the tank not enough to trip the sensor again.

I'll take some pics... it's not like a pool of black on the top of the coolant, but you can see there is oil in there... :frown:

Oil in the coolent isn't the big deal, but if your coolent is in the OIL...OUCH!

Exactly.

"Old Guys" have been known to dip paper towels in the coolant reservoir to sponge up the oil off the top of the coolant. ;)

Try a new coolant cap with the new oil filter adapter gasket and an immediate oil change followed with another oil change very shortly after.

The coolant pressure has to be more than the oil pressure to get into the oil unless it's a major problem.

Ok, is it a gasket or a plate? the oil adapter that is...

I guess should just ask, what is the actual name of the part I need?

Totally the adapter....

See I've provided "some" valuable information and even included pictures. That WAS back in 2007 though. :)

and how great is this line... :D
fairly easy to get to so remove it first to get your confidence up.

Ok, so I'm thinking of doing this myself (because I'm stupid) someone want to give me some tips for draining the oil and coolant? I assume the oil can just be drained out of the pan... the coolant?

Really... any other tips (like pay someone who knows the the &^%$ they are doing) would be appreciated too :D
