Pioneer Double Din indash

I just installed a "new" head unit in the Mark so I thought I'd add a little write up in case anyone wants to tackle the job themselves.
I picked up a head unit on ebay and I knew I'd have to do a little modification to get this true Double Din system into the Mark's Din and a half space. It wasn't bad at all, but it is definitely a tight fit for all the wiring behind the unit. I also had to trim some of the opening to get the unit in place. I'm very happy with the new unit as it has a ton of functionality. Pictures courtesy of my phone.

Start with what I needed:
I already had an aftermarket head unit so I didn't have to buy a harness that connects to the factory wiring but I did have to buy an aftermarket mounting bracket. I went with the Metra 95-5026 as I thought this would be a good fit. Just guessed really as it seems the Mustang/Explorer have a similar area. The connector was something like this from American international.

I used a hack saw on the dash to get the approximate size and a little trim/grinder wheel to grind down the minor stuff.

The head unit is a Pioneer F 700 BT. Has GPS built in, a mic to use with a cell phone to make calls and a connection to listen to and watch video off my iPhone.

Here are the pics:

I don't use the speaker outputs, instead I run RCA cables to the amps to power the speakers and sub. Additionally, the new head unit now has extra GPS antenna, Microphone, USB port and iPhone cables back there. There are alot of cables back there to get in the way.

Test fit again and it sticks out a bit. Scratches on the screen are from it being a used ebay unit, they look worse with the shop light on in the car. I had to adjust the cables to get it to slide in all the way. Also, I had to move this box that was a blue and gray color out of the way. I slid it down behind the climate control.

I had to pop up the driver center controls to adjust all the cables behind the head unit

Unit in and powering on. I need to see about modifying the splash/boot up screen.

Next are just a few images of the unit in and powered on.

Thanks guys. I'm really pleased by the look and it was easier to install than I had imagined.
The sound is great too. I love that my phone automatically connects to it and I can do hands free calling and having SD cards for music instead of burning CDs.

Ewww, Q101 plays so much crap now... lol How much did the Headunit run you, if you dont mind me asking??

Also, how is the radio actually mounted down? Looks good!

LOL about Q101.

The head unit ran just over $200 and you see them regularly on there for that much. Some are missing cables, some are not as good shape, etc. I had to buy the mic, GPS antenna and iPod/iPhone cable.

Its not mounted down hard. It is a tight fight around the wood like bezel so its not moving and I used the tab that slides on the metal rail in the back. I could probably tighten it down further but so far its good.

It's always better to error on the side of safety. You'd be surprised how many accidents vie been to where the radio ends up on the back seat....or in someones face. :D

Thats why I need to get the proper mounting cage installed in my 97 double din install

Holy snikes!

I'm going to make sure this sucker is locked down.

Sweet unit. I like how the CD slot is right there on the front instead of the screen having to move out of the way.

I'm tempted to try another audio system. I used to be a hard-core car stereo freak back in the 90s but have had the stock unit in the Mark since I bought it. I'm guessing you can get a pretty nice system for a lot less money than I paid back in the day. I had about three grand wrapped up in my '88 T-bird and that was back in '91!

And how! I'm waiting for a nice day to do a good interior/exterior clean.
I hate this weather.
