Poly Rear Shock Mounts - Swap Procedure

Burning the bushings if the fun part....especially when my neighbors look at me and are thinking WTF is he doing now....

Ok so since the car was completely torn apart I decided to work on this this weekend.

I wasn't worried about the lower mount yet since those arms haven't come back from power coating, but with the upper mounts on the Cobra Blisten shocks, the metal sleeve that the poly mounts come with WILL NOT fit, so either I got the wrong kit (SHOCK THAT COULD HAPPEN?!?!) or these are perhaps newer style shocks where the upper threaded mount is larger...I don't know just figured I would give everyone that is going to those shocks a heads up.

The stock shocks have a larger top threaded shaft than the Monroe Sensi-trac shocks I used. [ordered for '97 T-Bird]

The bushing kit that I got from Bill Evanoff @ Super Coupe Performance had the correct size sleeve for the Monroe's. I'm sure it would have been to small for the OEM shock stud.

Yeah thats the kit I got, but Im using the Bilstein shocks from an 04 Cobra and just figured I would give people a heads up about the sleeve being too small.

My guess is that you will need to have a tube/ sleeve machined.

OD the same as the sleeve that came with the kit and ID = to the measurement of the shock stud + .010 to .015.

On 2nd thought, you may just be able to open up the ID on the sleeve/ tube that came with the kit.

I'm not sure of the stud size on the shocks you have?

Yeah thats what I think Im going to end up doing....I havent measured the ID or OD of the sleeves of stud yet....been too busy with work, and trading my truck in for my new ride/DD lol I might get to that this weekend.

A vernier caliper works best for measuring stuff like that.

This is just like the one I have. It's a Starrett. :) [Top of the line]

I just received my poly shock mount kit and was wondering where this thing goes:

I haven't even LOOKED at the car yet, just didn't see this in the pics nor read about them in the article?????

Haha! That does INSIDE the metal brackets and is the dampening part. You burn out the old crappy rubber mounts and installing these in its place.

I thought THESE went inside, like this:

If you look up at post 23, you can see both these parts...In the write-up there is NO mention of the parts I showed first... I thought maybe it was use either OR....

Ohhh.....thats a better picture. WTH are they!? The inside hole is super big....maybe they are inserts for the bottom of the shock? According to SCP, they are for the bottom of the shock....but maybe ONLY for T-Birds.

Those are the lower shock bushings. There should be a large metal sleeve for each. Press the rubber ones out, press the new ones in and slide the metal sleeves in place.

Anyone with a torch. You could go buy one of those Butane torches used for plumbing ($60) and do it yourself. Its pretty easy.

I will have some trashy dudes at Sheridan Garage burn em out for me :) Any more tools in the shed and there wont be any room for the bar and area rug, or the couches !

Well, they sure don't "JUST press out" !! I ended up hacking off the rubber on the outside and burning them just like the top mounts...really a quick way of getting them off. Then I lubed the new ones and could press them in with a vise! Took about 15 minutes, most of which was watching them burn!
