problem w/ new Kooks headers

I just had a set installed w/ new high flow cats to go w/ my double X-pipe 2.5in exhaust and flowmaster 40 series mufflers. the new sound is not just bad but terrible. before w/ the flows it was a nice low growling burble and now it's nothing but a shrieking tinny drone across the entire rpm band. It's almost undrivable and if I was a cop I would pull me over. if anyone remembers how Joe's red car sounded at Carlisle last year, I think it's worse than that and I still have the cats and X-pipes. I don't understand how.

Is it just the flowmaster 40 series don't mix w/ this exhaust? I've heard mustangs w/ headers and flows and none ever sounded like this. has this happened to anyone else?

hopefully I can get rid of it w/ just different mufflers. Anyone have any suggestions? hopefully something with no drone. I gotta do it quick because I can't drive it like this to Carlisle.

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

That is one complaint I have heard a lot about the Flowmasters, is a tinny sound. I personally like the Magnaflow mufflers. Would it be possible to cut off one of the x's? The Magnaflow dual in dual out has an x built into it.

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

mna you gotta get some different mufflers. Even I could not stand that crappy sound from the red whore.

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

I put headers in over the winter, and i'm not too happy with the exhaust note/volume either. I plan on adding another muffler in there sooner or later.

My exhaust sounds sweet at idle, and great at low throttle openings, but when you get on it, it's loud and sounds like crap. Needs to be quieted down a bit so that i can floor it more without drawing unwanted attention.

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

That is what no Cats/high flow cats and high flow mufflers do for you. Hopefully I will get a turbo to quiet down the red whore soon.
I highly reccomend getting some chambered mufflers to quiet that beast down. ultra flows sound good on cat back systems, but they suck on cars with headers.

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

Anybody know the part number for the stainless 2.5" Magnaflows that will fit in the stock location?

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

So far I've discussed the problem with my mechanic who installed the headers. He said he's had luck putting in resonators on cars that were made too loud and obnoxious by headers. We're trying that today. If that fails to do anything then my beloved Flowmasters will have to go.

O and chambered muffler i forgot you want flowmasters get the 3 chamber

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

Maybe an o-pipe will do the trick }(

I don't know about undriveable, that's a stretch. I drove my car to the exhaust shop with open headers and it sounded frickin' beautiful.

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

After installing the headers my car was loud, harsh, and obnoxious. Almost undrivable! I installed a large 2in2out Magnaflow with an x-pipe inside it. Problem solved! Now it's quiet but sounds powerful under acceleration. It's not loud but sounds strong and powerful. I like it. At the rear of the car I have Edelbrock RPM's. Good luck!

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

Well, just removing the flowmasters helped a lot. The Magnaflows sound okay and have less drone. There is still however a rattling, clicking sound as if something is loose and vibrating like crazy under heavy acceleration. Underneath the exhaust growl, it sounds exactly like a playing card being put into the spokes of a bicycle wheel. There aren't any leaks so my mechanic and I are at a loss as to what could be causing it.

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

put the rear on jack and let some one step on the gas and see if you cant hear the sound from under the car,

RE: problem w/ new Kooks headers

The rattling 'should' be something loose on the piping (a bracket or something). My car is making the same rattling, but it isn't that bad. It just recently started and haven't gotten around to fixing it.

I've heard Johnny's car with ART's long-tubes, high-flow cats, and dynomax ultraflows and it sounded great.
