RE: put my gears in...
Right now, my car does the 1-2 shift at about 6k rpms, but it seems to go directly to third (that may be because of wheelspin) then downshift to second. I haven't been able to get a WOT 2-3 shift out of it yet, too much traffic, and the roads are still damp. The 3-4 shift hits at 5 grand.
On our trannies, if you shift from 3rd to 4th at WOT, at high rpms, with gears, there's a good chance of screwing up the tranny. I believe this is because a band has to come off and another band has to come on, and if these aren't perfectly synchronized, you'll either neutral out, or something bad happens. This has more to do with the rate the RPM's are changing than anything else. According to Jerry, with gears, RPM's are changing too fast to get those two events reliably in sync at high RPM's. So that's why it's set up the way it is. I just have to get it retuned so that it'll stay in third when i want it to, so i can at least hold 3rd through the quarter.
As for the speedo gear, i don't know if i want it or not. It MIGHT make it shift better, but i've seen one of those gears. I got it with the diff, with about 1k miles on it. Let's just say i'm glad the missing teeth aren't in MY tranny.
That article seems a little convoluted. It seems to me that if you DON'T change the speedo gear, the car will know the correct OSS speed and be able to correct the shift schedule accordingly. If you DO change it, the computer will think the driveshaft is spinning slower than it actually is, and shift at the same vehicle speed it did with the stock gears. That article needs clarification.
