put my gears in...

woohoo! Too bad i can't get any damn dry pavement. Managed a donut or two down the street, and the sideways action is all kinds of fun, but i want to see how it launches and shifts! I can't tell if it's shifting at 6 grand or if it's spinning and bouncing off the rev limiter AFTER it shifts (damn wet pavement). We'll see. fo tens rock!

RE: put my gears in...

did u change the driveshaft too? id really like to do this as well since danny boy mentioned that i could still run the car to 140 after its done.

RE: put my gears in...

Dont want to hijack the thread but... Isnt the chip supposed to turn off the Over drive lock out at high speeds so you can stay in 3rd instead of being forced to go into 4th?

RE: put my gears in...

Depends on who's chip you use. One of the vendor chips allows the car to shift in to overdrive at around 115 even if you have it "turned-off". Others allow you to run it up past 150 with the o/d turned off and don't shift into o/d until you turn it back on. Of course, this is with the stock gears.

RE: put my gears in...

I replaced the driveshaft, but i'm using a stock "speedo" gear. My speedo is fine, i don't know how it shifts yet because it's still raining. I don't know where the governor kicks in, but i know at WOT it hits 4th gear at 5 grand, and pulls past 100, so it's good for now.

I have a "tune" from jerry. Even if i leave OD off it hits 4th gear at 5k in 3rd gear, which will suck because i may hit OD before the end of the quarter. I'll probably get it retuned in the spring to take care of that.

RE: put my gears in...

Hi Dave

If you change the Output Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS) gear, commonly referred to as the speedo gear, you will correct your problem of the tranny shifting at 5,000 rpm. On Gen2 cars the speedometer gets its input from the left front ABS sensor. The OSS feeds the Powertrain Control Module with driveshaft speed info which it uses to tell the tranny when to shift. See Jerry's article on the TCCOA website http://tccoa.com/articles/gears/ees.html for details.

You will need a 23 tooth OSS/Speedo gear which is an aftermarket part. Five Star Ford carries it under part # XM-17271-C for $12.71.

RE: put my gears in...

Right now, my car does the 1-2 shift at about 6k rpms, but it seems to go directly to third (that may be because of wheelspin) then downshift to second. I haven't been able to get a WOT 2-3 shift out of it yet, too much traffic, and the roads are still damp. The 3-4 shift hits at 5 grand.

On our trannies, if you shift from 3rd to 4th at WOT, at high rpms, with gears, there's a good chance of screwing up the tranny. I believe this is because a band has to come off and another band has to come on, and if these aren't perfectly synchronized, you'll either neutral out, or something bad happens. This has more to do with the rate the RPM's are changing than anything else. According to Jerry, with gears, RPM's are changing too fast to get those two events reliably in sync at high RPM's. So that's why it's set up the way it is. I just have to get it retuned so that it'll stay in third when i want it to, so i can at least hold 3rd through the quarter.

As for the speedo gear, i don't know if i want it or not. It MIGHT make it shift better, but i've seen one of those gears. I got it with the diff, with about 1k miles on it. Let's just say i'm glad the missing teeth aren't in MY tranny.

That article seems a little convoluted. It seems to me that if you DON'T change the speedo gear, the car will know the correct OSS speed and be able to correct the shift schedule accordingly. If you DO change it, the computer will think the driveshaft is spinning slower than it actually is, and shift at the same vehicle speed it did with the stock gears. That article needs clarification.

RE: put my gears in...

I got a bit more time in with the gears. the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts both happen at about 6k rpm, but it spins the tires on the 1-2 shift and then shifts to 3rd, then catches, then shifts back to second.

RE: put my gears in...

hey dave, do you know when jerry is doing another tune session? I really want to get that done.

RE: put my gears in...

When i had mine done, i had to call a guy called Dyno Dave in Taylor. His phone number was 313-295-4468 at the time, i'm not sure if it still is.

I just went out for a couple of Tazzo runs, and i'm a bit disappointed. I was running 15.1's last time i was on this stretch of road with the Tazzo, but i ran 14.7 at the track, with plenty of 98 and 99 mph trap speeds (and one 100). I ran 14.7's-14.6's today on the Tazzo, with speeds around 95. I'm spinning pretty hard off the line (my 60's aren't any better than before the gears), and the car is hitting 4th about 2 seconds before the end of the quarter, and falling flat on its face. So there's a lot more in it, and some of it should come out with a tune. But i'll put the headers and the converter in before i get it tuned }>.

RE: put my gears in...

Changing gears doesn't really change your quarter mile time much, maybe a tenth or two. Not nearly as much as people think it does. They are more fun to drive though.

RE: put my gears in...

I'll get half a second out of these gears, definitely, no problem, if i can make it hold third gear to the redline.

Sometimes I would pay money to know what goes on in your head.
That is a truely false statement.

RE: put my gears in...

Dave, do you have stock size tires.

The calculation I came up with is 5173 rpm's trapping at 100 mph with 4.10's in 3rd gear with 225/60/16 tires. You should have plenty of Revs left to get thru the 1/4. Sounds like a chip issue to me.

I thought he was kidding. a tenth or two??? you can get a 1/2 of second from gears alone.

RE: put my gears in...

Well, if you want to compare to what i was running consistently on the Tazzo before, i picked up 4 tenths. Spinning through first gear, and hitting 4th WAY before the end of the 1/4. But i'm not going to make it to the strip to evaluate JUST the gears, because i'm going to have the headers and torque converter in by spring, and i'll probably have it tuned by then.

It is a chip problem. I do have stock size tires, but my car shifts into 4th at 5000 rpms in 3rd, and that's about 90 mph.
