Started Engine swap project

So today I started my engine swap project. I am throwing a 97 engine in my 96. I will also be putting kooks midlenghts in as well. I didn't do much but get the hood and the wiper assembly off and unbolt most of the intake. and get the engine onto the engine stand instead of the hoist. the engine is going out through the bottom.. at least thats what I am hoping for.

I already managed to break a few vacuum lines.. lol sure more things will break as well. here are some pics and figured I'd throw in a pic of my slammed front end, need to replace the bags.

RE: Started Engine swap project

Hope it goes smoothly.

What kind of wheels are those, don't think i've ever seen them before.

RE: Started Engine swap project

looking at your pics tells me that I will need to go into the engine compartment with wire cutters MAN O MAN is there a lot of wires and vacuum hoses in that engine compartment and about 98% of them I wont need for my engine swap 349 push rod engine
but I truely wish you the best perhaps I can send you some of those lil knick knacs that break when I permenatly remove the 4.6 from my 94 mark VIII as I wont be needing them again
just one last thing
what part of your swap did you need a snow shovel for :)
keep us posted

RE: Started Engine swap project

the snow shovel is because of the snow we still get up here.. ;) nah its still on the ground but almost gone. I will be posting pics all along the way to keep you guys informed.

The rims are from the 01'ls.. I've had them for years now on both my cars, they were a pain in the rear but well worth it, imo.

RE: Started Engine swap project

so yesterday and today for a lil bit I stripped the new engine down to basics and cleaned it up. the next nice day which will probally be tuesday or wednesday I will swap over valve covers and clean up the pullies to a shine. and work on getting the engine out of the othe rcar.

RE: Started Engine swap project

good luck to you please take lots of pictures I think we all like pictures
I would like to see one of an empty engine compartment so I can see what is left
I am also getting geared up for a engine swap just waiting for the new engine from the builder and I have to get a few tools and Clean out my garage ;)

RE: Started Engine swap project *update*

here are some pictures. I will write more later on. also I included where I mounted my tranny cooler. it was a tight fit and the only way for the hoses to fit was to turn it sideways. I am using zipties to hold it in place. Also there is a picture of the rest of the smog pump which I took off. I replaced it with the horn for my alarm, which when I got the car was near the maf and the wire was just strung across the top of the engine, a pisspoor instal job.

Looking good so far. Be sure to use the intake from the 96, the 2nd gens are horrible.

Eli did you get my pm? I was wondering if I could re-use the valve cover gaskets? also what do ya think about re-using the intake gaskets that have been used for only 3-4 months

I'd recommend replacing the valve cover and the intake manifold gaskets. Better to do it now than when the motor is in and ready to run.

Be especially careful to get the IMRC's lined up when you put the intake on without sliding them around too much, that can cause the gasket to get cut.

RE: Started Engine swap project *update*

yea thats what I was thinking.. I just didn't wanna spend so much money for gaskets.. I'll be paying more for gaskets and fluid for this engine swap, they I paid for the used engine. if not mor ethen pretty damn close

Yes, I replied via email, or so I thought. I had said that I would replace the gaskets, and also the small rubber donuts inside as well. Clean the valve covers as best you can, and use plenty of RTV so it doesn't leak.

RE: Started Engine swap project *update*

So today I finally got the engine out the bottom. Me and 2 of my friends and my brother got it.It took a few days of prep work, I wasn't rushing and I did most of that by myself. some people say they can do it under 2 hours, if you have a lift I'd say thats possible but I can't see myself being able to do that so fast. Then again this is my first time.
Getting the balljoints out was a pain, and when lowering it via an engine hoist it got snagged on the steering shaft but we had to raise her up a bit and it went down smoothly after that. Then the car wasn't up high enough so we had to spend some time re-raising the car. and it came out.

A few things I Reccomend

1:Taking the intake off before you try to take it out of the bottom if you don't have a lift. I had it off already but if I didn't I would've had to raise the car up higher then it was.. and I already didn't feel that comfortable with the car so high.
2: I bought a bike lift and I feel that made it alot eaiser that trying to get dollies under there, and it pulls out straight. and its off the ground so you don't have to worry about the spindles and rotors hitting the ground
3: it def takes a few people to lower it, get some friends together, don't try it by yourself. Also don't lower it w/o some kind of engine hoist from above, unless you have a big enough engine jack or those huge engine lifts. I have a bunch of pictures to load

The first ones are of the car up in the air engine ready to be dropped. and then the engine dropped with the clearance issues.
