Unusual situation with ABS/traction control

I jacked up the rear end to make sure my posi was working correctly (it was) when I noticed something else. With the rear tires off the ground, engine running, and tranny in "drive", both rear wheels accelerated as expected. However, when they hit a certain speed, the brakes applied themselves until the wheels slowed down somewhat - and the cycle repeated.

I was wondering what was going on when my dad said "traction control". Of course...how could I be so dumb?

So I go in and turn off the traction control only to find that the brakes are still applying themselves like before. So my dad says, "ABS?..."

Anyone know why this is happening?

I am thinking that I might have a bad sensor, but I don't have any warning lights going on. Does this mean nothing is wrong or that my Superchip is negating all the warning lights?

I remember on my Superchipped 93 Mark when I had an ABS sensor go bad, the warning light came on; but my 96 is OBD2, so I just don't know.

Does anyone have any insight or feedback? Thanks.

RE: Unusual situation with ABS/traction control

The traction assist is integrated with the ABS module. Since all four wheels aren't turning, I'd say the ABS control is kicking in since it's seeing the rear wheels rotating and the front not rotating.

no, the abs won't kick in unless you're on the brakes.

but the traction control won't shut off when it's active. You can hit the button, but until it stops kicking in, it won't shut off, if that makes sense. You would need to hit the brakes, put the car in park or neutral so that the wheels aren't spinning, then shut off the traction control. Then it will go off.

I found out this little tidbit when i had my '94 stuck in the snow. It's true on the gen 2's though also. On the gen 2's the traction control activates for a minimum of 6 seconds as well.

RE: Unusual situation with ABS/traction control

The other day I took off T/C and did a short brake stand for the first time (for a second or two before I let off). When I was done being an idiot, I pressed the button to turn it back on... but it wouldn't turn back on! The button was still lit up no matter how many times I pressed it. A few minutes later, I tried it again, and it turned off. Anyone know what that happened?

RE: Unusual situation with ABS/traction control

The t/c was probably active during the burnout. Sometimes it won't shut off right away even though the light comes on. If it's on for too long it will automatically shut off for awhile to prevent overheating of the brakes. so that's why it wouldn't come back on for a little while.
