Vibration noise

I have no idea if its the transmission, T/C, driveshaft or rear...

I'm getting a noise vibration cruising at constant throttle, and braking (once the car gets to about the 2000-1000 RPM range there is a loud vibration noise).

It does not do this when i brake with it in neutral.

The driveshaft and rear are old and stock. Is this what happens to them or is it my transmission?

Shifts are good though and the fluid is clear. (only about 2k highway miles now).

My 'high performance' TC from Reinhart did this to me right from the get go. Vibration from 1100-1500 rpms. There was some back-and-forth between him and the installer between being a bad TC vs. improperly installing the flex plate. In any case, it got resolved when I totalled that Mark, but based on previous garbage I bought from good ole' DR, my money was on the TC.

You DO have Mercon V in the tranny, right?

I didn't fill it the installer did so I'm not sure.

I also didn't order a flex plate? (Unless it just came with one and they installed it )

The car ran great for 2000 miles. The converter is locking up good, what about the converter would cause the vibration when stopping?

The Mercon V was not for your problem....it was to take care of the "shudder" in pre-1998 $r70W tranny's..... Sorry, misread your original problem. However, you should check to make sure you go your 1998 tranny back from the rebuilder and NOT an earlier MY tranny. An insure that there is Mercon V (or equivalent ).

Bud - put down the Wild Turkey...it's affecting your grammar.

The flex plate is removed from the old tranny and typically put on the new one. Reinhart said if they don't torque the plate bolts properly and in the correct order, that vibration may result.

That BS smiley would be great right about now. Numerous motorheads confirmed with me that Dennis didn't know what he was talking about.

And yes, I was getting the vibration in idle...this is because the flex plate spins with the engine at all times. It is directly attached to the crank...if I'm not mistaken. In fact, the vibration was worse in idle...probably because when engaged, the tranny connects (via fluid) to the crank, thus dampening whatever vibration the plate is generating.

Im running smooth at idle. Its just when I'm stopping from 2k-1k RPMS and at constant speed.

I noticed a clicking sound today once engaged in reverse also? Im not sure what all of this means. I kind of think the drive shafts U-joints are worn, and it can't handle the torque... I don't have experience in this, so if someone else does please feel free to chime in

Crap...I didn't mean to say idle. I meant neutral or Park. The vibration would appear when I revved up to between 1100-1500 rpms.

If this isn't a symptom, then your problem is not likely flex plate related.

A few maladies come to mind - though I have not had them happen to any Mark VIII of mine.

Loose flexplate/crank bolts or loose torque converter bolts/nuts. I've had cases where I've had to lock-tite them in place to keep them from loosening. Easy enough to check both.

Torque converter clutch problems - anything from burnt clutches, hot spots, missing friction material and even bad fitting lockup pistons will cause vibrations. If a fluid change or treatment doesn't cure it, the only other fallback is a new torque converter.

Tranny tailshaft issues - such as a loose tailshaft housing or worn tailshaft bushing. Generally a good inspection will determine any 'looseness' in the tailshaft.

Driveshaft and u-joints could also be suspect. I've seen seemingly 'tight' feeling u-joints literally fall apart once removed. You may also have possibly lost a balance weight or otherwise have a damaged driveshaft. If you end up pulling the driveshaft, it's easy enough to have the balance checked and install new u-joints. Be sure to remember to match-mark both ends of the driveshaft before removing.

Just tried it, and its smooth.

I had a similar issue develop in my Mark.

-I did a full flush with Mercon V (that cured my TC issue, not the noise and vibration)

-I replaced my stock '95 driveshaft with a '93 unit

-I then had my '93 unit rebalanced with new U-joints installed

-Then I broke down and purchased a new d-shaft from SCP

-Then I replaced my tranny tail bushing (I bought the forced lube mod from BOC)

-Also, I replaced my coil pack with new Ford units, and I replaced my o2 sensors (this helped smooth out the motor and provide better power when in a lower RPM range when the motor is in overdrive)

-I'm 95% done. It is certainly reasonable and I don't mind it anymore. But, I think to get it done all the way I need to replace my motor & tranny mount.

...anyway. That was my quest, and it got my to a much happier place.

What about motor mounts?

Not WT, it's Barcardi Silver ... Mind works....fingers don't do what they are told to do....

An honest man of distinguished tastes...that's why we like you Bud.

Pour yourself another...I am now curious what your next post might look like. ;) I'm hoping for 8 pages of this vibration problem that slowly evolves into how depressed you were when your childhood dog died.

Forgive my bizarre postings, I'm feeling really eccentric at the moment...

...and you say I have problems....????? LOL I got an excuse.....

I've got an excuse...mentally deranged. I told everyone about my shrink, remember? Little Burmese guy whose broken english I no longer try to understand. He gets me my pills with all the x's and z's, so I'm all set. Though since I was laid off and lost my benefits, I've been my own doctor for almost a year now. I'm one of the few guys who opens those emails that say "...Vicodin, Valium, Xanax, Viagra, Paxil, Ecstacy - you go to website.,.YOU BUY NOW...all your drug are belong to us..." So far, the stuff made by the starving kids in Mongolia has sufficed.

Can you tell I'm a guy with a positive attitude?

Man, if I were the OP, I be pissed!!! Wayne, you and I have to get together....going to All-Fords? Maybe we ought to resort to emails??? I have reigned myself in to only one drink a day.... I own a LOT of very tall glasses tho.

Sorry OP...I know I do this too much.

I only hope you were at least mildly amused by my response.

Loose flexplate/crank bolts or loose torque converter bolts/nuts.

Torque converter clutch problems

Tranny tailshaft issues

Driveshaft

Is there any way to check these? The T/C is still locking up fine, and i was under the car yesterday changing my oil, and tried to wiggle the tail shaft (there was absolutely no movement)

Tried the same at both ends of the drive shaft, do i have to take it out to check it?

is it possible see if the flex plate is loose without removing the transmission?

Thanks!
