xmsn seperator plate modification

If it were mine, I would put a Motorcraft filter on with fresh Mercon V refill after blowing out the cooler lines. It may not have suffered long enough to cause permanent damage? After all, what do you have to lose besides the cost of a fluid/filter change?

the fluid looked really bad, a lot of black sediment in the pan. Last week the fluid smelled but was still red, now the fluid is dark orange or burnt sienna.

looks like its time for a rebuild. Mine was doing the same thing as yours. except I lost 3rd gear first. then 4th. mine was cause by a piston seal was ripped for the the clutches which caused the over drive band to work hard and brunt it up.
the rebuild was not hard and I got all the goodies with the exception of the converter for about $600. the 2500stall converter was $340.

Well, I don't have the tools or the experience to do it myself so I'll probably get a used one to last for a while and have mine rebuilt to my specs and use that to replace the used one when it goes. I always wonder what it's like to have what you need already on hand. That would be nice.

i didnt have the tools that they said you needed either. though if I do it again i will buy the lip seal protectors. besides that its basic hand tools. the special ones just make life easier, and this was my first time taking one apart.

I just found out today that you can get a FORD re-man tranny with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty from the dealer for $1500.
