I am looking at a 1996 Continental....I am a bit leary due to the low low price of the car. In that I don't want to be buying someone elses problems...I love the looks, the luxury, the power and all that...I just wanted to come by here and get the low down on these cars for daily drivers and practicality.

I like to personalize ALL my cars whether it be a family car or whatever...So I want to lower it and add say 17" or 18" wheels, as well as a few performance mods that won't hinder practicality of a daily driver...

Any and all coments and suggestions are welcome...

LOL, sorry, the thread must of been buried before I came on. You have to be a bit specific with your question, are you asking what type of mods you can go for? Or are you asking for prices and where to buy? And also, how much are you willing to spend?

My suggestion would to install a tranny cooler, Chip... full open dual exhaust will gain you a good 20-25Hp... Sorry, don’t know much about FWD.... (Can you get gears for that thing?).

Please be more specific so we can further help you bud.

I've only had my '98 for a few months but I love it. I'm retired but I use the Conti regularly and it's probably the most comfortable car I've owned. It has the adjustable air suspension and, even set on "Plush", it handles great. On the interstates it is very smooth and quiet and has plenty of power for passing and cruises effortlessly at well above the speed limits.
Most of my driving is on backroads and two-lanes and the mileage (according to the computer) stays in the low twenties using 93 octane. The car has 57,000 miles on it but it was well maintained and runs like a new one. From what I read and what I've learned from other owners, I really don't expect any major maintenance problems with this car. Probably the most expensive item to repair might be the air suspension system at some time in the future but, there are some links to parts suppliers on this forum and the parts are readily available. I usually don't keep my cars for any long times but I think this one is a "keeper".

my mom had a 96 continental fully loaded. she bought it used with 24k miles. first the front door panels started to crack really bad (right under your elbow!!! ouch!!) then at around 50k the transmission went. a few monthes after that the entire rear suspension had to be replaced (was at the ford dealer for a good three weeks) then we found out the car had been wrecked (got into a small accident, discovered silver doors on a car thats green)then at around 80k miles everything went to hell. the second tranmission died (fluid line was leaking, cooked the tranny) then the air conditioning went. it blew ice cold one day, then two days later it would only blow the ambient air. and then the power steering went. a BAD leak from the rack. sometime within all that stuff going the electric fans decide to stop, and cause a short which could have burned the car to the ground. at 86k miles my mom sold it to a ford dealer (go figure  ) for $2,000 (remember its a 96,fully loaded in good condition, minus everything mechanical [clean body, clean suspension, cleaNn interior])

but i still loved that car :) cruising at 60mph all you had to do was give it 3/4 throttle and you were at 100mph before you knew you were accelerating....
