1997 Base half-breed

cvpis had the long tail shaft trans, and that contributed to the shorter shaft length.
i was thinking around 55.5" for the cvpi to 58.5" in the mark.
of course, i have not verified this, but i would very much like to know, as i have seen other conflicting info on that.

i could also be full of it and making things up... :roll_over:

I will report when I have the cars/driveshaft measurements in hand (at the earliest NEXT weekend, as I will be in Gainesville for the GatorNationals this weekend).

The car has started to develop an interesting driving characteristic as of late. It has become more pronounced in the last two weeks as I have been keeping track of it and experimenting with it. As I accelerate, all is normal. Once I have gone beyond 45mph, if I sharply let off the gas, the car wants to hard-over (self-steer) to the left. As I accelerate from 45mph, it wants to immediately hard-over to the right (until I bring it under control by the movement of the steering wheel). I can hard-brake and it has no ill effects. Moderate braking also has no effect. I can hard-accelerate and it will not do it. Only under a load from 45+ and letting off above 45mph will induce such movement. To me, it feels like a wheelbase change brought on by either control arm or rear cradle bushing instant deflection.

Any ideas guys?

P.S: I am sorry if it bothers anyone for me to keep a rolling journal of my car here.

I don't think it bothers anyone but you're supposed to be showing off your ride here, so you might want to post some more pics of the progress. :D

This is true, but since no real progress has been made (as I have been driving the wheels off of it) no pics have been taken. I have to make it to a local yard to grab some goodies sometime REAL soon.

While I was up in Gainesville for the drag races, I came across two nice Marks VIIIs (Black Base 97-98 and a Greenish 93-94), plus a Flat Black Mark VII riding on 96 Cobras.

As those who read my post in the 'Electrical' section know, the car suffered a 30mph impact with a guardrail Friday (the 13th, usually good days for me) and has heavy front damage (along with some wrinkles in the passenger side rear quarter from impact twisting transfer). She is wounded beyond economical saving (as she is already a half-breed Salvage-titled car). She will require frame straightening, new front sheetmetal, and the frame stubs (which the front bumper bolts to) to be cut out and replaced. Along with that, a replacement Black Dash and steering wheel will have to be sourced. In the 20,000 miles I have had her, I have become quite fond of her and have even come to like the uniqueness of her half-breed character.

With all of that stated, I am looking for a beater car to schlep around in, and will be taking the time and financial effort to fix her correctly. While into her, I will add the subframe connectors, driveshaft safety loop, floor pan stiffeners, front and rear k-member/cradle braces, and a few other reinforcements. Now will also be the time to get the other upgrades done (4.10 gears in a trac-lock unit, ASHAM8, tubular front and rear control arms (fronts with a revised ball joint location to allow for lowered driving while keeping the air strut at proper extension), Cobra brakes, tune, Cobra intake and headers, steering shaft, Navigator steering wheel with radio controls, and a few other things. Now is also the time to fix issues that remain unresolved from the last time she was pieced back together.

I see how the Mark VIII can grow on you. I bought the car to use for a driveline donor for one of my Mustang projects, but could not pull that trigger after driving her for a small time. Now that she has saved my butt AND got me home after a hard hit, she deserves to be saved, economics of it all be damned.

Removed what was left of the header panel and bumper cover. Found that my AIR valve was (plastic portion) completely shattered and the metal 'dome' bent toward the front bumper (from the force it hit the ABS module/Core support). The drivers side core support is buckled in enough to put kinks in the brake lines. Front steel bumper is a metal boomerang. Drivers side bumper stub will need to be cut out and a replacement unit welded in, the passenger side may be able to be saved by port-A-Power and spot-weld.

The Traction Control (and now ABS) lights are illuminated in the dash (I will more than likely replace the ABS module and do a thorough testing of the sensors). Found a car (2hrs away) with a Black interior for sale as a parts car (a 97 Base), don't know if/when I will pick it up. First things first will be getting the car up on the rack and getting her pulled back straight/true. I've now acquired material to manufacture subframe connectors and chassis braces, so once I get the car back I will be concentrating on that avenue before anything else.

Hopefully I can pull it off! I really need the major portion (the frame straightening) done by a professional outfit (as I don't have those kind of tools). I can do the rest (between my experience and my dads best friend being a professional paint/body repairman) with the assistance of time/friends/lift.

Most any major body shop can do the straightening with their frame and body straightener rack. When I rebuilt the Blue Flame after it's misfortune, I didn't realize it needed tweaking until the hood wouldn't line up. I believe it cost somewhere around $300 to get it done at a local shop. That allowed me to do most everything else except the quarter panel and paint.

I'll be dropping her off sometime early this weekend to have them pull her back square! I will also be replacing ALL of the ABS/wheel speed sensors.

Looks like I will be in search of another (non-CVPI) transmission to use for parts. On the 7 mile drive to the body shop yesterday, I started smelling warm trans fluid. I got to the shop and parked the car. In the time it took me to exit the drivers seat and walk to the passenger-side door, a puddle (of trans fluid) the size of a dollar bill had formed under the car, with the 3rd cat completely covered (and dripping) in fluid.

She is home now; it cost me $276 after tax to have her pulled back square. Now I need to perform some core support straightening and acquire the needed front clip to finish out her sheetmetal restoration. Trans tailstock will be next, plus a complete sensor replacement for wheel speed transducers to hopefully restore my 'Anti-Lock' brakes and 'Trac Control' (mainly to get rid of the lights in the dash!).

While the car is down, it would be a good time to procede with the mods I already have a complete parts inventory for.

Not at all. Now to get the entire front clip off a You-pull-and-Pay salvage yard car. by the way, if you live in Florida, the You-Pull-It yards are going to a 'No Anything Airbag' policy. That means no dashes for us (as the airbag is integral with the dash).

I did get the front sensors lowered as much as the stock brackets will allow (which seems to be about 1/4"-3/8"). I will be getting some spare front sensor brackets to modify so I can get the car lowered (even though I have the ASHAM8, I still want to get a preliminary sensor lowering and use the ASHAM8 to dial in the ride height, and for parking lot stance).

Not any major update (as I am waiting for my paychecks to tell me it is OK to go get parts to rehabilitate the old girl) but I did give the LSC treatment to the chrome trim around my tail lights. Installed a leather-like shift boot; will have to trim it and make a base plate to properly fit the boot to the shifter/bezel.

Started cutting my spare hood to fit the GT500 hood vent. Sadly, even with the 3-day weekend I didn't get much done on the car as other commitments took over.

Will post pictures once I can download them from my phone.
