94 Mk8 Drivetrain Slipping

Today while on the interstate driving to work, the engine started revving so I backed off the throttle and then realized the car was "out of gear" as it re-engaged after I backed off the throttle. This behavior occurred one more time during my 15 mile trip. The overdrive button on the shifter is in the default position so I am wondering if this is a mechanical problem (transmission slipping) or if it is an electrical problem having to do with the overdrive. Any helpful comments are appreciated.

Sounds like a potential transmission problem to me, but I haven't put much time into the trans on these cars. Check the fluid level. :)

I'll bet others here will have more / better ideas than I.

Mike -
The fluid checks ok but I will check again if it makes it from the office to home. Thank you.

Good news is, that sounds EXACTLY like the typical MLPS failure.

The MLPS , otherwise known as the "range sensor" or "neutral safety switch" is located on the side of the transmission. It detects what gear you have selected and commands the computer. if/when it begins to fail, you will feel as if the transmission went in to neutral.
It is most common at freeway speeds when in OD (overdrive)

Not to worry...parts is available at most major auto parts stores, through FORD or online.

search:
MLPS
Manual Lever Position Sensor
Transmission Range sensor
Neutral safety switch

The Echlin part number to interchange is:
NS6526

O'Reilley's Master Pro part number is

MPI 2-8827

Echlin is part of Napa Auto Parts house brand.
It retails for about $80

I'd suggest taking this opportunity to also do a fluid and filter change on your transmission.

New neutral safety switch installed, transmission fluid and filter changed, both done last Friday. I drove the car about 35 miles on the interstate over the weekend with no issues and today I drove the car to and from work 15 miles each way with no issues. I believe the MLPS diagnosis was right on and again thank BlackIceLSC and the other forum members for sharing the knowledge. Tallman.

Good deal, I think the 4R70w's are good transmissions when they're taken care of.
