How bigs the unit? My jvc went in without any real modification but similarly when i was putting in a pioneer unit in my old crown vic i had to file the sides down ever so slightly

On the two I've done, I had to shave the bottom of the opening, but trim the top by 1/2" or so. A RotoZip tool made fast (but messy) work of this.

I should emphasize. this is the opening in the dash itself. The bezel opening, is plenty big as it is.

Here's a copy-paste from one of my installs..

"To make a double-din fit, you have to hack away a fair bit of structure behind the bezel, and I have yet to see a mounting kit that actually fits this car. I fabricated my own mounts. You should be prepared to do the same. It is possible to do a clean install, but you'll want to be able to "take your time and do it right."

Here's the end result of my own install. I don't think I actually posted pictures of the process here though.

How can I tell if I have the JBL amps? My door speaker grills say JBL, but when I plugged in the harness there is no sound. I used the Metra 70-5603 harness with the RCA's

If you have the JBL logo on the speakers, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet. The amp resides in the trunk, clipped into a tilt-down plastic tray under the package tray. Unless someone has messed with the stereo prior to you owning the car, I'd say it'll still be there.

For wiring, I believe it was the Scosche FDK10B that got the job done. It /does/ require that the factory amp function, and be left in place. (Don't forget to hook up that blue "amp turn on" lead!)

That's correct.

If your head unit is RCA only (or if you wish to go RCA only) you're basically committing to replacing the aftermarket amp with a factory one, and either replacing all the speakers with aftermarket, or building your own crossover networks to work with the (separate) factory speakers.

For what it's worth, these things sound pretty darn good with an aftermarket head unit driving the factory amp and factory speakers. You won't win any SPL competitions, but range and clarity is good enough that you'll regret keeping those 128k mp3s you downloaded in the 90's in your collection...

Got it all hooked up before work yesterday. I used the Metra 70-5600 harness. It really sounds great and it's nice to listen to cd's and able to stream from the phone. Next up is an Infinity powered sub for the trunk and a backup camera. Thanks for the help guys.
