Anyone interested in rear Cobra brake relocation brackets?

Like the title says....

Anyone interested? Now that I've found a pretty good waterjetter, and finally have my own TIG welder, I was thinking about maybe making/selling the rear relocation brackets. I asked about these on LVC and have had some decent interest. Wanted to ask here as well.

Doug sent me his CAD file for the base plate nearly 3 years ago, and I happened to still have it saved in my email. I think I'll forward it to the waterjetter and see what he can give me for a price on the plates.

Of course, these would be made from 304 stainless steel with all stainless steel hardware, so you wouldn't have to worry about them ever rusting out.

I know there are those aluminum ones that someone is selling on the Thunderbird forums, but I'm not sure how I feel about the use of aluminum...

Let me know what you guys think. I think the aluminum ones go for $100. Ideally, I'd like to price these lower than those, but I'll need to work some numbers to see if that's possible. If I end up proceeding, it'll likely be sometime around the first of the year, since I'm moving soon, and the holidays.

Anyway, these are the originals:

These are similar to what I'm proposing to make:

Maybe. I'm going to install cobra brake on the front of my car.

How would the parking brakes work with the Cobra brake?

I would be interested, as I have Cobra fronts going on soon. (ok, soon as within the next 6-8 months) Just keep me in the loop for the development of these.

Like Chris said, these will utilize your stock Mark VIII caliper, it just allows you to use the larger Cobra rotor on the rear.

So far, it looks like there is a somewhat decent amount of interest in these. I figure I would likely be safe with a run of about 10 sets or so without bankrupting myself waiting for the remainder to sell. lol. Might be able to get a few Thunderbird guys to buy them too.

I'll definitely reference back to this thread, so make sure you're subscribed to it. I might do another pre-pay option for the first 5 sets or so when the time comes. Maybe sometime in December, since I expect most of November to be really busy. That seemed to work out really well for the shock mounts I'm doing right now.

Let me know if you guys have any other ideas of parts I can make. I'm trying really hard to come up with some new ideas.

Thanks for making these available Jay!

I'll need a set eventually but I'm not sure which way I'll go. I used Dave Dalke's (SCCoA) on the last hub swap I did and they are very nice units.

I have a set of aluminum ones but I'm open to getting some other ones if these are better. I am in absolutely no hurry though (Govt shutdown has reduced my income :( ).

Well, I'm gonna go ahead and say that mine will be better.

But...I may be a little, tiny bit biased. :fart

Way to knock a product without even trying it LOL.

D.Dalke pieces are top notch. No doubt.

These brackets are so simple that I think your waterjetter's time would be better spent making something different. What ? Not sure. How about a reasonably priced rear diff mount ?

I'm sure they are very nice, and probably work really well, but it does better for me if I can cast a little doubt on the "competition". LOL. Just kidding. I only made that comment in jest. I had hoped that the farting Smiley would point that out. :wink2-green

A mount? Like what SCP sells? That might be possible, but probably not any time real soon. Maybe I could find a stock one at the junkyard or something, and toy around with it. I wish I still had access to the shop I had in the Navy. Prototyping was much easier there. I don't have an easy way of cutting metal plate in my garage with any degree of certainty. lol. Besides, I think Saturn5 on LVC made one up at some point...and a jig.

I made this when I was still in the Navy, and would be pretty much impossible in my garage...

No worries, it's going to be white here for the next 6 months. PM me your address again and I will look for it this weekend.

Navy huh? Did a stint in the 'Yacht Club' myself. Learned to fab up some stuff while in as well (too bad most of it relates to Jet engines).

I am always looking for ways to improve every vehicle I own. Give me a while with the MKVIII and I will probably have a dozen ideas for parts.

(oh, and I have some ideas for making brackets to adapt Lincoln Air-Ride back into other cars)

Hey Jay we aren't hating buddy :) I'm sure everyone appreciates you stepping up to the plate to make us cool stuff. Jeremi does have a point that Dalke makes very nice stuff but if you can sell yours at a lower price point I'm sure they will also sell.

Are you able to make the strut rod bushing sleeves Doug used to make? I remember him saying they were VERY time consuming to make. I need a set or 2 sometime in the future if can.

I'm always open to ideas, as long as they're at least semi-practical! lol. Unfortunately, there's not too many applications for jet engine parts on a Mark VIII! :big-grin:

Lol, don't worry, I don't feel hated-on. I don't have a price point on the bracket plates yet, but I'm pretty confident that I can beat the price on the aluminum ones, by a pretty decent margin. The math in my head has me thinking I can offer the set of them for somewhere near the price of the shock mounts, but I won't know for sure until I speak with the waterjetter.

I haven't attempted the SRB sleeves yet, but that will probably be one of the next things I try out. I originally was worried that I would have to machine each sleeve end from a single piece of rod stock, but now that I have the welder, I can do it the same way that Doug did without worrying about tearing up my little lathe going through so much stainless steel.

I would be the guy to get a TF34 or a GE F110 to fit into a Mark though (ok, it might look odd with a huge inlet where the grill was and Turkey-Feathers sticking out of the Continental hump on the trunk. But that afterburner glow sure would be cooler then the 'Neon' tail-light treatment!

On a bit more serious note, I can see underhood front strut tower braces, rear shock tower braces, diff cooler mount brackets, Hub rings/spacer for the 5x4.5" swap to allow different offset/backspacings and Hub diameters to be used, custom intake plaques and badging (thanks to the waterjetting), chassis stiffening bars/plates, Caster/camber plates...................................
