Anyone know something about the CL Class as well as Jaguar XKRs??

I am currently doing some research and perhaps planning a future purchase of a few cars that have sparked my interest.

My absolute favorite is the Mercedes CL-500, 55amg, 600 series. I know that Mercedes used to be the benchmark of quality and reliability up until the early 90s. Now more recently I have heard major horror stories about MB reliability issues mostly with the electronics. The CL class is basically a 2 door S class so similar problems should be occurring. I want to find out if those cars are just total money pits or if they run forever if they are properly cared for?! Some owners complain that the car is in the shop once a month for a problem, while others experience trouble free ownership.
I have not found any sites as good or anything close to the quality of information provided on this site. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

Another potential car that sparked my interest is the Jaguar XKR (02-03), in the limited research I was able to perform I have found they are mostly trouble free with the exception of Cam-tentioner problems that should have been cleared past the 01 model year. Yet I am still lacking good information concerning the longevity of this particular car. (I would keep it from 50-100k miles).

Any information or experience with similar cars would be greatly appreciated

I have a friend tat has a xkr and he loves it. I drove a few times and have to say it is a great car. He has had it for abour a year now, 2001 model. No problems at all with it. I think they are in the mid to high 13 sec 1/4 mile cars right out the box, but not sure so dont qoute me on that. He paid around 50k for his and it looks brand new still.

Now I went and made a fool out of myself i meant to say XJR, XKRs are too expensive for what they are.
01-03 XJRs are selling for 22-32k right now, so they are quite a nice deal with 370hp out of the box, total sleepers. I love the way they look and I love their performance, if they would just have good interior I would be sold. They lack a nice navigation unit/screen, and the way the radio/navigation in that car is shaped makes it close to impossible to replace it with something else. http://photos.ebizautos.com/3620/860291_33.jpg

The 4.2 is found in 04 and up XJRs... and those cars are appearantly plauged by all kinds of other problems. Mostly electrical and fit and finish due to the new redesign.

Hey Max I did some research on the CLK (W208 - different from the CL W215), a few months ago and nothing stood out that told me to definitely "stay away". I did find that the E class was one to avoid and that MB was having lots of problems with reliability and customer satisfaction, but based on what I have experienced at Lincoln and Ford dealerships, it can't get much worse.

I was ready to buy the CLK but I just couldn't part with my STS. After tint, wheels, exhaust and some paint I'm a happy camper again. Much like the Mark VIII, the Caddy is more rare and that means a lot to me.

Don't see too many XJRs out there either...:)

XJRs are rare, even more rare than a Mark perhaps. I like that certain appeal, and I love the style. They are a killer deal as of right now, lots of great ones are comming of leases and selling cheap, just like Mark VIIIs back in the day. Best time to buy an almost new car. If I could find a website or DIY help site such as this one or anything close, I would be sold.

Have you tried a site like this:

http://www.jcna.com/

There seem to be quite a few Jaguar car clubs out there.

Ya, I tried that particular site and a few others, while they do have forums they have little to no members and most lacking any kind of experience in dealing with the car (XJ, XJR). The best one I found was at roadfly.com I'll see what I can come up with over there.

Just wanted to add another car that fit the rare, tailored performance luxury sedan description...The Infinity Q45. I think I've seen two of these in person since they came out with the new body style in 2002.

I Love the Q45 interior, engine and trans are a good combo as well. But I don't like the way it looks, it just looks like a Maxima with different headlights/taillights. Same goes for an LS430 (big avalon looks). I am still considering a GS430 (if it looked better from the outside I'd have one already), and a 540i (hard to find with a good options combo at a reasonable price). I am still a few months away from my purchase so I am trying to gather as much information as I can.
