Is there a difference between these two rear suspension components for the Base Model 1997 Mark VIII? Different sources. The photos appear to show the same items.

no difference in 94-98 rear shocks.
93s and early 94s were automatically adjustable, but it was dropped in favor of a conventional shock.
all years can use thunderbird rear shocks as well, and Jay Richmond makes great aftermarket rear upper shock mounts to replace the clunking original stuff.

What do you mean by automatically adjustable ? Will the cougar shocks work as well ?

They are meant to be used with the electronic actuators, clipped on top of the shock, that will adjust the shock from normal to firm. You can manually adjust them and leave them in any desired position if you wanted though, we did this on my friends '94 SC. They are physically the same shock just adjustable. Cougar shocks are the same as Thunderbird shocks so yes they will work too.
