Best setup for a mid 13 second Mark?

1997 Base Mark, I want a parts list I should purchase in order of importance to be able to be in the 13s. By reading this forum I decided the following should cost a little more than $1000 w/o labor and get me into the low 14's, I'll need a tiny bit more to get where I want to be. Let me know if you disagree.

1) Exhaust setup - cat back LMS XX pipe w/ 2.5" into LMS Xpansion II
2) LMS Chip
3) LMS Airbox
4) LMS MAF

I expect to be in the 13's next spring. By then i will have:

PI Stallion 3200 stall torque converter
Jerry "mod" and tune
BBK long tubes, modified
4.10 gears, traction lock
Cobra intake
full 2.5" exhaust

My car is a '97 base model. You definitely need a tune or a chip, i recomend getting it dyno tuned by jerry or someone that he taught. You definitely need to do something with the tranny and the computer, or you'll never see a 13 second pass. The intake gained me about 4 tenths and 7 mph, +/-, and i didn't even port it (yet). The headers, gears, and torque converter aren't in yet.

Converter: $700-$1100 new
J-mod: $50-$100
headers (get the kooks or ART): $700
gears, posi, set-up: $700-$900
MMC driveshaft (needed with 4.10's): $460
J-tune: $400 (including dyno time)

the stock MAF isn't a limitation if the car is tuned right. Getting a different MAF (and putting the right transfer function in the computer) is only worth a few hp. Everything on my list up there is about $3900, if my math is right, and that's about what it'll take to run 13's NA, give or take. You might make it without the intake and/or headers, though. You will need full exhaust, though. The LMS stuff looks real nice, but you can get it set up by someone local, too, if you know a good place, and it may be cheaper.

If you want to run 13's, and do it cheap, spray it. You might be able to spray it into the 13's without any other mods, but i'd say at least get a good tune and some type of limited-slip device.

$4,000 huh? That's too much money for me, didn't realize it was that expensive. Maybe I'll just get the chip, exhaust, and cobra intake for now.

Damn, i forgot about the Cobra intake. Those run about $200-$300, plus the vaccum lines and gaskets you need to put it in, plus the cobra fuel rail and intake tube (or you can make your own intake tube, but that's not free either).

IMVO, the cheapest way to 13s would have to be:
Cobra pumpkin w/4.30s
Metal Matrix Driveshaft (necessary for gear change)
NOS kit- 150 shot
Motorcraft AWSFA-12C Spark Plugs
Dennis' chip (so that you don't melt anything)
Skinnies and Slicks

You may forgo the skinnies and slicks for now, but you'll have to drive it, not nail it at the line with 4.30s on street tires. But to get the added torque to the pavement, you'll need slicks. The skinnies should drop 1 to 2 tenths off your quarter.

If you do the gears or the NOS, you'll have to do the chip and the drive shaft.

My list will also cost you about $2500-3000. I've only tried the Metal Matrix Driveshaft (which doesn't make it any faster, but was a necessary replacement), the Reinhart chip combined with the Plugs (which definately made it faster by 4 tenths). But I've seen enough mods and money put down over the years to know what bangs for the buck.

The cheapest way to low 14s does not include exhaust mods, airbox, or MAF. It is purely NOS and chip if you care to endure the drive shaft vibes and can hook up at the line with a one-legger. These cars with driver weigh 4000 lbs. They are geared too high for quick acceleration from a stop (a built-in safety feature). If you gear them for the line, you'll start to have traction issues.....

Go with what you know. Your car came stock with a 3.08, single spinner. Its gonna be hard to overcome that disadvantage without fixing it first and that means paragraph 3 above.

i went 12.7 at 109 with 3.73 gears, shift kit, trans cooler, pro-mass air with my adaptor kit, my ART exhaust, bigger injectors with a 5115 kit and drag radials. 650+100+150+350+320+300+500=$2370 and 12.7 at 109 granted those prices are just high ball park figures but it should not cost to much more or less for that stuff.

Wow, $2370 and 12's? That's the best report yet in this thread. Mods don't sound too drastic either.

i figured since most of you guys have not attemepted or suceded in your goal of going that fast. that some one who has, should list there mods and cost of them. a lot of guys think it take more mods to do it but really it just take know what you are doing. there where one or two things i lelft out like a fuel pump but i cant list every thing. it is pretty easy to go a 13 and not that hard to go a 12.

intake, 3.73, MAF, headers/exhaust, chip, and NOS 5115 and I was in the 12.75 range.

I did all the work and was out:

intake-time and 50$ gaskets
MAF-200used
Gears-time + 50 gears+100 bearings+50 clutches
headers and exhasut-time+300headers, 50$ gaskets and bolts, 300 exhaust, 100$ mufflers
chip- 250
NOS 500$

total 1950 + a lot of labor that i did myself.= 12.7 with only a 125 shot

Okay, now lets put a realistic price on the labor you did yourself.
Intake=250ish
Gears=200ish
headers=250ish, plus 75=steering knuckle,ceramic coating =250
Labor to install headers=500-750
Nitrous install=200ish

So add another 1800 or so to that total.
