"Big Brakes"

Having only owning the modified CE for a few weeks and actually only having it out twice since then, the first "opinion" I have arrived upon is it needs bigger brakes.

I admit I am spoiled... with the Blue Flame having been through a hub swap and Cobra brake upgrade and even the '96 having front Cobra brakes, I guess I expect my Mark VIIIs to "whoa" as good as they "go". :)

The CE currently sports drilled/slotted rotors and 'performance' pads (ceramic?) with the stock calipers. While 'adequate' and possibly better than 'stock' I am left with a wee bit of trepidation when driving through the neighborhood 'twisties' or high speed sprints on the highway. It will likely be a while before I pull the trigger on this, but I have been looking at a few options and thought I would start a discussion to solicit different opinions.

The most obvious consideration would be upgrading to a PBR caliper Cobra package and I feel that would satisfy my desires. Whether or not that would include a hub swap is optional but a wheel change would most likely would be required.

I know many before have sworn by Brembo brakes and I would have no problem following suite but I was wondering what other options there may be available working on the presumption most '96+ Mustang brake package would 'fit'.

Wilwood 6 piston packages are one that comes to mind since I have explored them before when considering 'drag brakes' for the Blue Flame.

I've had the cobra brakes on my 98 since 2008/09, and I love them. My 97 was stock, but with "good" rotors/pads, and was adequate enough for a car I didn't want to waste money on.

That being said, I've got 2 sets of Brembo (one set of Cobra R, and one set from a Fiat) calipers in the garage, waiting for me to decide on which set I'm going to use. Both will work with 13-inch rotors, but I'm leaning towards the Cobra R calipers since they're brand new.

Anyway, I say go big or go home, especially with the car you've got there...

LOL... I like that.

I've even considered transferring the brake setup from the Blue Flame and upgrading it to a drag brake setup for better track performance (since it's become painfully obvious it has become more of a track-only car).

But, I don't want to go through the process only to be left wishing for more.

These are the ones I have. They'll fit underneath your FR500's btw...

The black ones are the '00R's, and the silver ones are the Fiat's..

You'll love the Wilwoods, driller! The first thing you will notice is just how thick those rotors are. It's nice being able to change the brake pads without taking off the wheel.
