Brits pay over $6 @ gallon

CNN said that the Brits are paying over $6 a gallon for gas. That's around $100 to fill the tank. No wonder small cars and diesels are so popular over there. I let the Mark get down to "0 miles to empty" then filled it with 17 gallons of 93 octane which cost $35.

yup gas in Europe is insanely expensive! But there is a reason, they have VERY good public transportation systems set up everywhere and a family is fine with just having 1 car. Where as here the same scenario is impossible. Btw it would cost me $42.50 for 17 gallons over here in cali.

It is also common to have a 'weigh' tax, annually or even monthly on registered motor vehicles in Europe. Larger vehicles = less mpg = more taxes, not only driving it but just owning it(like our personal property taxes). I've known one such country in particular where about a year ago, the gas cost per liter there equaled our cost per gallon and on top of that a Mark VIII was subjected to a $150 per month tax! The tax was based on weight NOT value, and I'm sure the value was taxed as well! So at $6 or so per gallon with a hefty monthly weigh tax, the 'commoner' would very unlikely own anything comparable to a Mark VIII.

germany also taxes for emissions, and multiplies the tax by engine displacement. Cars that aren't classified, (such as marks and vettes) automatically get the highest rate. So you have to be pretty rich to own a vette in germany.

But hey, that's what you get when you go socialist, and let the dirty hippie tree hugging bastards have too much control.

btw they pay 17 cents a gallon in Venezuela!!
[/div]

I read last week that they pay only 12 cents in Venezuela....oh, well, one of our sources is wrong. ;) The only countries that are cheaper than that are Iraq and Turkmenistan.

The article that I read about Venezuela said that people had sophisticated gas tanks that took up entire backseats and what-not to smuggle gas over the borders, but I guess they've really cracked down on that recently.

That's EXACTLY what you get. It'd be interesting to see how much their gas would cost without all those taxes.

Canada (like the US) has MANY socialist programs. I wouldn't want to give up any of them. Remember, any service that serves the population equally without direct payment is a social service. Armed forces, police, fire, and the operation of government itself at all "socialist" programs. I guess it all depends where you draw the line...

The government isn't efficient enough to run the country, let alone the lives of 230+ million people. Have you ever been the the DMV in California lately? I don't want these people helping me with my health care claims.

The more control and influence the government has, the worse it can be.

Armed forces, police, and fire aren't social services, they're civil services. The role of the government is to protect it's sovereignity, and maintain order. When you get into social security, welfare, medicare, etc., those are social(ist) services. And you have to watch out with those, because certain politicians want to add new ones every day.
