I'm looking for a good camera which doesn't cost a fortune. I had a Nikon which bit the dust so I'm looking to replace it. What should I look for in megapixels, zoom, etc?

well if you want DSLR then you get different lenses for different zooms and types of photos, for cars wide angle is good to get the whole car in the shot, etc. If you currently have any lenses then you can just get a body that works with them. Otherwise if starting new all the main brands are good and have good megapixels, maybe you want more compact size etc. OR you maybe you want something that works well in low light and has good image stabilization.

Norm, If you can live without an optical viewfinder, I'd suggest looking into the mirrorless DSLR type cameras. I've been fairly pleased with my Sony NEX-5, but Olympus, Nikon, and Panasonic all make similar units. They're worth checking out. The quality is fantastic on all of these, yet they are quite compact.

Just recently got the Canon 70D. So far I like the picture quality. The Nikon D7100 is it's main competitor which has a little bit better picture quality but I chose the 70D because of way better auto focus while video recording, touch screen and wifi.
