check engine light *still* on... what else?

Hello-this is my first post, I hope someone can help.

I have a 96 Mark, the check engine light is preventing me from passing DEQ.

I was told by DEQ the crank sensor was the problem. After replacing that, CE light still on, DEQ guy says it's the cam shaft sensor.
Replaced the cam shaft sensor, no change, still won't pass::nono:: .
Code 304 came up with the next check. Pulled plug #4 cleaned and replace it. Still no change.

A quick check at auto-zone showed code 340.

What the heck is causing this?
My car runs great, but I can't get a pass thru DEQ until the light is off.:B

any help would be appreciated,
stacey

are they clearing out the codes after they install the parts? it is code p0340 right? if so that is the cam position sensor circuit malfunction. id check that whole circuit front to back

Welcome! :)

DTC P0340 = Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor circuit malfunction (CID)
DTC P0304 = Cylinder #4 Misfire detected

But you already knew that. ;)

Did they clear the codes? My OBD-II code reader has a 'clear codes' function.

With the new camshaft sensor and the codes cleared, if DTC P0340 returned, it is most likely a faulty harness connection. The camshaft sensor wire(s) are known to break at the harness connector causing an open circuit. You can purchase a replacement harness pigtail from any FLM dealer and cut off the offending connector and properly splice in a new one.

Good luck! :)

what he said.

Does the car occasionally stumble when you try to accelerate right after starting it? That's what my '94 did when that pigtail went bad.

No stumbling, she runs great, that's what's driving me so crazy...

hmmm, could I clear the codes myself or do I need a code reader?

I didn't take it in, did the repair work myself (w/ the help of google, chilton and haynes ;) )

edited to say, I tried disconnecting the battery cable to reset the codes, that didn't work ::uh::

edited again...
Ok I borrowed a UBDII code reader, tried clearing the codes-nope.
So now I guess it's on to the camshaft sensor wire fix...

::wtf:: something's got to work right?

it clears then I restart the car, 2 maybe 3 times and it comes back.
it's running a bit rough today too...

It comes back after 2 or 3 times probably because it is "pending DTC"...a code which is triggered only after a fault has been detected after two consecutive trips with the same fault.

It is a lower grade of fault that is likely harder to isolate because it does not adversely affect vehicle operations to a large degree.

I'm not sure what to suggest though... :(

I may just have to give up and ask my dad ::roll::... anyother suggestions?
don't let my mark be upstaged by the mercury :B

If it still throws a camshaft position sensor code, I'm at a lost. With a new sensor and harness you should be good to go. I've not heard of anything else that would give that code. :(

Did you disconnect the battery for a while to clear the code?
