A customer had his SportTrack towed into our shop this morning. He was towing his SportTrack behind his Motorhome "Coach" for about 50 miles before he noticed a problem. There appeared to be a lot of sparks coming from his SportTrack. There was only one small problem, when he got his SportTrack all setup behind the motorhome he forgot to take the trans out of park. Yep he had been towing it for the last 50 miles in park. The tires were gone and the rims were half gone, must of also wore down part of the axle housing to because it was leaking. Don't know how the trans is yet.

Fifty miles and no one else on the road to maybe, oh... stop him?

I wouldn't believe it if I hadn's seen something similar with my own eyes many years ago. I was on the interstate, and a van was going in the opposite direction, pulling a small U-Haul type trailer. It was trailing lots of black smoke, but I couldn't figure out what I was looking at. As it got closer, I realized that the trailer had lost its left wheel and was running on the axle. Sparks were shooting fifteen feet into the air and something was on fire. I got a look at the driver, who was just looking straight ahead, completely oblivious to the inferno he was pulling.

The "worst" dragging sparks story I personally ever seen was after dark on a rural interstate. In the opposite lanes, far ahead I could see a shower of sparks shooting out besides a set of oncoming headlights. As it grew nearer I could still not discern what was going on other than it was obviously a tractor trailer.

Only when the rig was passing by did I discover it was "towing" a small compact car that had driven into the rear of of the trailer and had become lodged somehow at the DOT bar on the back of the trailer! He had just passed an exit, as had I. I pulled over to the side of the road(this was long before cell phones) and contemplated backing up to the exit to find a phone at a gas station off the exit. Looking back the truck had finally pulled off the side of the road and vehicles were congregating near the scene with their emergency flashers on. I put it in reverse and started to back up my one-ton utility truck, planning to get off the exit ramp behind me and find a phone. With flashers flashing, I was backing up looking back into headlights of vehicles passing by me at highway speeds. In what seemed like an eternity(30 seconds?), I had backed up to the exit and just started down the exit ramp when emergency vehicles were going under the interstate overpass and entering the opposite side of interstate to the scene a quarter mile or more from the on-ramp.

Pretty wild.
