Dash panel surround doesn't fit

I bought the wood dash panel that surround the headunit and goes around the shifter for my 97 Lincoln, online.
Looks fine until I go to install it. It doesn't fit. If I pop the top section of it in (around the head unit) the bottom end around the shifter pops up. If I pop the bottom section that goes around the shifter down, the top part that goes around the headunit pops out.

Anyone ever hear of variations in this part?

This isn't it, but in case you want a visual, the part I'm talking about is the wood trim part in the middle:

I put the 98 CE wood in my 97 no problem.

Those are the only 2 years that use that style.

Is there a chance that yours is warped some how?

I'm thinking it is warped too, but thought I'd put it out there to see if anyone had experienced this. Emailed the seller about a possible problem and haven't gotten a reply.

The guy is not from this site and I'm not going to out him until I make sure it is the part and I'm not missing something.

WOW...that needs to be returned for sure! That Non-fit doesn't have anything to do with his radio.... it ain't even in!

That does look warped.

I used the same dd kit you did and had to finagle the trim on there. I beleive I inserted the top first then pressed the bottom in. There was still a 1/8" gap on the right side when seated...But it did fit.

Is it hitting anywhere when you try to put it in? Also, check the clips that hold it in, you dont have the old ones stuck in there still do you?

Manny,

The surround is Bent ! Someone pulled too much on the top or bottom part of surround when removing it ! It could most likely be returned to correct shape by using the middle section as a fulcrum and pushing down on the top and bottom !

I do have a CE , and a non CE surround for sale !

Good Luck,
Sonny

Yeah, I ended up "notching" the slot on the right side to allow it slide in better. Had no problem with the original install and original dash panel fitting after that.

The old clips are not on, I even took the bracket that goes below the heated seats and the panel screws into off to see if I needed to align or adjust it.
Very weird too as the panel doesn't look damaged and its not a slight gap.

.
Do you mean the upper right plastic clip on the trim that insert's into the dash? Which part did you notch? I could never figure out where the obstruction was preventing it from seating better.

I notched the hole the dash panel goes into. There was still a bit of a gap in the upper right hand side but it was better. You can see part of the slot in this picture, upper right slot:
