so i was driving my mark 5 when i was nearing going down hill. when the BATTERY died on my car and it shifted in to neutral by itself. and my car started rolling down hill. (not a vary steep) and i put it in to park when rolling down hill, it stopped, and then i started it and made it a few more feet and pulled to the side of the road, do you think i damaged my car??? i was going under 5 mph

You might have.. On the bright side, the parking pawl is a completely separate system. Even if it breaks, it is unlikely to effect much else.

Here's one from a Chevy S-10. (best photo I could find..)
ParkingPawlAssembly.JPG

You'll want to be very aware when you park on an incline. If the pawl (that lever bit in the photo) is damaged, it will not fully engage with the notches, causing the car to slip out of park.

Then the car will go "click, click, click, click" as it rolls away.

Keep driving the car paying special attention every time you park it. "Feel" that it is firmly in park. If yours has broken, you'll notice within a few days.

I may or may not know this from personal experience. :D

This is one of those cases where being a know-it-all is exactly what we need, and has some significant entertainment value as well.

The fact that you ran a transmission shop is also a little tidbit of information that I have filed away for future use. If you feel my assessment requires expansion or correction, feel free to do so.

I have to tried to maintain anonymity on my experiences. But I am going to install a high performance Fairbanks trans kit, new power valve and a couple of other items in my 4R70W trans. I would like to do A; as I work on it and picture guide. Do you think everyone would like to follow it?

Yes. :)

It may or may not have damaged the trans. The pawls are designed to ratchet and stop the vehicle at least once (whether or not it'll do it again is an entirely different question) I'd try to do some experiments like parking it on a hill and seeing if the pawl holds it or not. 5 mph isn't terrible though.

Funny i remember once back in the 90's i had a Cadillac. The brakes went out no pedal at all. Here i come into an intersection blowing the horn through the red light.
I threw it into park doing about 30 snapped that bad boy right off. The tranny guy said he never saw anything like it. Driving to the shop with no brakes and putting it into reverse and giving it some gas as not to stall to stop it. Didn't help either LOL!
All that trouble for a rotted brake line!
