Dissassembling a Mark VIII engine

I originally posted this first photo in the post a photo you took today thread, I thought I'd start a new thread to show some more shots of it.

I'm taking this engine apart, hopefully to try and sell the block and free up some room for a good running spare engine. It was originally in my Green 94 Mark VIII. It developed a tick but I didn't have time to work on it then. I haven't seen any spring, rocker or tensioner damage yet, it might have just been a bad tappet.

I'm really amazed how good this engine looks, It had about 190K miles on it, there is no visible wear on the chains, sprockets, guides or tensioners. You can still see the factory cross hatching on the cylinders. This engine always ran great, getting excellent fuel mileage.

I heard stories of the cross hatch still being visible on high mile engines nice to see, it would be fun to pull the slugs out and check the walls for taper.

Good idea, I'll be taking it apart all the way anyway, I've got a dial indicator, I'll check it for taper.

I haven't checked all the cylinders yet but, I can't even feel the ridge at top of the cylinder. I've never seen that before.:)

I got back to this project today, I pulled the pistons out.

All the rod bearings look slightly worn but nothing serious.

Check the bores yet? I'll bet they are just fine, given the cross hatch is still so prevalent.

I'd like to see what the top of the pistons and bottom of the heads look like.
My guess is not too good because of the EGR system.

It is encouraging to see the bores and bearings look good.

A engine at 150k could last with head work, gaskets, and a timing set.
It might not the best dollar investment, but with these engines getting scarce it might be the only option short of a total rebuild.

Here's some quick shots, I think the head and pistons look pretty good for 190k miles, I've seen much worse. :)

The open intake valve shows some possible crud deposits on the inside of the valve though. :D

I'm also taking apart the engine from my red Mark VIII, it had 205k miles on it and ran great when the car rusted out. The mice were storing their acorns in the valley beneath the intake manifold. :D

I've taken a few of these engines apart as well and the part that always gives me the most trouble is that damn cross-over tube. It's so hard to get those out with out damaging them.

Also these engine make great raceing seats...
