Electrical problems, error messages, and no start

Bluedog.... don't know if this will help or not....

I experienced partial power losses a number of times.... replaced alternator at least 3 times (thanks lifetime warranty), battery once and still had intermittent power losses. Once, while going thru the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, the auto headlights came on and things started going off...radio-lights-instruments except speedometer and temp gauge. Got thru the tunnel and pulled over. Shut off ignition and had to be towed home...wouldn't start -not even click! That's when I replaced the battery. It then seemed ok for a YEAR! Then started doing it again! I tried do a number of things and every time I disconnected the battery (ground) and reattached it, it would start and be ok for..??? ... long. Again blamed it on alternator... after 3 years and never really finding the problem I DID figure it was something in the wiring under the battery and maybe into the master fuse panel under the hood. Anytime it would quit all I had to do was take off the ground - pull and poke that ground lead and reattach. Bang it would start and be ok.... never really did fix it...it just never did it again. The guy I sold it too has never called me about it, so I guess it is still OK....FOR NOW! But I know it will raise it's ugly head again. Hopefully he will call me before he puts a lot of time into it..... thought this MIGHT be something for you to investigate if you can't find anything else.

If you have a real good battery, and depending how many electrical things you have running....maybe an hour.

If an alternator goes bad how long can a car run?
Well I know this probably means nothing in the Mark VIII world with all it's fancy electronics and such but... I had an 1984 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe that had a bad alternator and in the week I was too poor (or lazy) to fix it I would charge the battery at night and be able to drive the car all day (normal 9-5 kinda day) before the battery started getting weak and the car would start acting weird.

Ok. So I drove the car on a few short local trips and had no problems untill today. I was driving to the store and then after a few miles I got the 'Check Traction Control" message and the ABS light was on. Then "Check ABS" message. Then the 'check charging system" message' Then the message center lights dimmed and turned off. At that point I decided to turn arround and drove it home. Then I started getting "Engine temp data error" and " Gear data error" messages. Stopped getting the traction control and charging system messages. Parked it at home. Turned it off and restarted it with no probelms. Took the other car to the store, shopped, and returned. Restarted the Mark8 with no problems or error messages. Think maybe my computer is going bad?

Buy one of the digital volt meters that plugs into the lighter socket.

Swap alternators for a test session.

I was planning to swap the alternators between cars to see if the problem follows the alternator. Would a Fluke meter accomplish the same as this cig lighter meter?

I've used my Fluke meter with a cigarette lighter adaptor before.

On another note, I just had some weirdness with my green Mark, I was measuring 16+ V with the engine running. The positive terminals on the power disrtibution box were loose. The nut seemed tight, but that's because it was a crush nut. The stud was all corroded from sparking. Jeremi had one from his parts car we swapped in. We used a non crushed nut on it this time, I hate crush nuts. :)

Is the power distribution box the engine compartment fuse box?
