Exhaust Noise Laws By State

That looks like a good reference. Thanks, Mike.

Sadly, Minnesota's law, although "yellow," seems pretty explicit. so much for my dreams of cutouts.. :D

I had no idea Illinois was so strict. Not that it's likely enforced except in extreme circumstances.

And Paul is right. I've heard some ridiculously loud motorcycles around here.

The cops have always been more worried with my speeding over the exhaust in Frosty. Although, if I am pulled over, I usually shut the car off so I don't add any more citations to the list. LOL

I've been pulled over in MN and Chicago when I lived there while driving my 65 goat. It's bright yellow and screams trouble, no one has mentioned the exhaust; one may have mention something about an excessive show of horsepower but never the noise. :)

A bright yellow '65 GTO would be an excessive show of horsepower while parked.. Sounds like they let you off easy. :D

Some of those are a bit vague, although some do reference standards, and I see Michigan actually has dB levels. I'll have to test my MG (my Lincolns all have stock exhaust) and see what levels I see at 50 feet.:)

I see strange and vague noise ordinances all the time at work, check out this one, see if you can see the problem with it::laugh:

Thanks for posting this Mike. Even though now im a little upset as I had plans to go with highend cutouts. Wont be doing this now. I got my stainless steel mandrel bend pipes,x over and tube kit coming in the mail now.
I'll be upgrading to 2.5 inch pipes from the 2 1/4" pipes that were on it.

Lol that's about right, but try Branson. You know, Redneck Vegas. Even call the highway that runs through where most of the shows are "the strip"

Years ago, (early to mid 90's?) my family made a road trip to Branson. Did the tourist thing, and hit a few of the shows. I actually have some pretty good memories from that trip.

I'm in MI and back when I had my 7, I had 2.25" no cats with magnaflows. It was not very loud at all but between 52-57mph it had a drone. I got pulled over 3 times for loud exhaust. Never got a ticket, but I asked the last officer what the law was because I didn't think my car was very loud at all. He said anything not stock and it was his discretion. From then on, I would drop my car down out of OD when I was near the police as to prevent the drone.

I'm about to replace my mufflers with dynomax mini race bullets. The rest of the system will remain stock for now. I'll see if the 5-0 turn their heads in my direction. Shouldn't since most of these trucks and camaros and mustangs have super loud exhaust. My 99 GT had a full 3" exhaust from the MAC long tubes, cat delete, o/r x-pipe, and flo-pro mufflers. Never even got asked about it and it was pretty loud.

The last and only cop that I had an altercation with regarding my exhaust he said, " I have a hot rod too but you should get that exhaust fixed." Wait huh??! What I want to know is what kind of an exhaust setup HE has on HIS hotrod. I have an exhaust setup that is common to many "hot rods" out there. Headers, 2.5" pipe with an X and chambered mufflers. Yeah, ok. That statement threw me for a loop. That was the most retarded crap I have ever heard. I'm not fixing an exhaust setup that costed me $1200 SORRY It's not like I have exhaust cutouts on the car and what do the cops say about all those hot rods with open fricking headers or dumped exhaust running to the car show up on Main Street every weekend which happens to be RIGHT NEXT TO THE COURTHOUSE AND COUNTY JAIL. They don't say a word to those guys and the cops are thick up there every weekend. You can go away now.
