From the people who have done a gear swap...

how much will a swap to 342's or 373's cost me?

Parts & Labor

Please don't waste your money. Go with at least 4.10s, and dont even think about installing them without a diffrential.

Gears:200
Limited Slip:250-400
Install:200-400 depending on if you know where to go or not

4.10s are the stuff. Be prepared to do a driveshaft though. Maybe you'll get lucky. I didn't. Got my new driveshaft from Dennis Reinhart. Also, the LSD is needed. Without the LSD the gears would be almost usless.

I wouldn't waste my money on anything less. My pricing was similar to Eli's.

Locking differential- I paid 320. retail was 425.
New install kit with all new bearrings, seals, and races 125.

What do you mean by horrible? Before the gears I got a pretty consistent 23mpg and after it's around 20. This is mixed driving. It maybe more than that, but you don't get good mileage leaving 2 burnout marks on the pavement on launch or from the 1st to 2nd shift. I love roasting the tires on the 1st to 2nd shift.

There are folks here getting better mileage than me with gears.

I’m not sure if I lost more economy from the higher revs on the highway or from enjoying the added power.

The only gears I would Get would be 373's , just for the fact I won't be at the track all the time and I drive on the highway alot. But would i need to get a new differential along with the gears or just the gears and install kit... ?

If you want 3.73s, you might as well go with a new center section from FRPP. Max at FiveStar has them for around $650 shipped for club members. This way you still have your old pumpkin, if you ever decide to sell the car ... not that you would. LOL.

I'll do that installation for half that price! (if you're getting the FMS pumpkin, so i'm not setting up the gears).

I've been driving with 4.10 for a little over a year. I love'em tehy PULL like crazy. However 80% of my driving is hiway so I have been thinking about 3.73. The higher RPMs is not really a problem, hardly noticeable (unless your exhaust is too loud). Gas mileage suffered about 10% or a little more over stock. I'm thinking I could buy a new 3.73 center and just sell this 4.10 center whole... I might if I'm lucky break even on the deal...

I want to do the 4:10 swap,I am not very savy on these things but can a shadetree mechanic do this swap or should it be done by a pro. also i know you have to buy an install kit and speedo gear but do you need a new pumpkin if your car has trac control, how come you cannot use the factory one and what exactly is the minimum you need for the swap,In oct I am going to have my car on jackstands changing front struts and sway bar in rear, would like to get this done too.any info always appreciated!

Now on the 4.10 if you were at a stop light and punched it you would spin like crazy through first. How can you win a race like that? How bads the spin

I've driven a couple of peoples cars with 4.10's and the traction problem isn't that severe.
