Gen 2 Tailight Woes

So after getting a new ballast and new tail light, lacking mold, I was able to get the neon working. Wow looks wonderful. First major rainstorm we have had and now the darn thing is out again. Judging from the problems I've had, the fact lack of tails working that I've seen in person it's safe to say that this whole neon and ballast arrangement is worthless.

I have the original tail light with gunk on the inside that I could use as a guinea pig. Is there anyone that disassembles these and installs something simple like an LED rope light or something more durable?

Damn neon lights fail, and their only 18 years old. Sounds like you should solve your water leak. I had a 98 with the end caps missing on the light mouldings (4 of them). Plugged them with black silicone and it solved my leak problem.

Me and my brother rigged up a design using some drl lights, they were solid rope with enough lights that it looks like a neon rope. It was gonna go around the border on the inside and use the same basic wiring.

Dont remember exactly how to get it open but im pretty sure its just glued together like headlights

Alternativly there was someone on lvc that managed to wire in like 100 led lights that made it crazy bright and he made it seqential which i thought was cool

It appears that several of the tabs on this new light have broken off allowing for a gap between the trunk and top of the headlight. Not to mention the tabs you speak of are broken on one side. I saw that sequential tail light, man was that bright!

I thought you WANTED to be able to drain water out. I drill small holes in the lower corners because from the time I bought it and for 3 months, it water sloshing around. I don't get a lot of rain, but since them I have never found water in there. Also that isn't mold, it is just that the coating on the inside is rubs off really easily.
