GM is using Honda engines.

I recently read i think it was car and driver and they reviewed a Saturn Vue Suv. They also mentioned that GM broke down since they couldn't deliver a good midsize engine for the Vue and they have purchased the 3.5 L HONDA v6 that is also put into the Pilot as well as the Odyssey minivan. Simply said i was a little stunned because the world biggest car manufactorer can't use one of their own engines. ::wtf:: Well thats just a little food for thought. Not to mention their Pontiac VIBE which is a clone of the Toyota Matrix.

Here is a little spec sheet on the V6
Vue(left) Pilot(right)
Horsepower @ RPM 250@5800 240@5400
Torque @ RPM 242@4500 242@4500
Displacement (cc) 3471 3471
Bore X Stroke (inches) 3.50 X 3.66 3.50 X 3.66
Compression Ratio 10.0 10.0

I doubt it was because they "couldn't" build an engine like that. It was that this way is cheaper; they can get a good engine without the r&d or tooling costs associated with a new design.

ditto on that, i was just trying to sound a little dramatic, it still doesn't change the fact that they do not have a decent V6 (non supercharged) in their lineup.

Yamaha assembled the engine in Japan, Ford built the engine components in Ontario. Ford took credit for the development of its V8 engine.

There is a big lawsuit concerning that engine. The allegation in the lawsuit is that the camshaft slips while the car is running and bends or snaps the engine's pistons and valves. After as little as 40k miles the engine could suffer a total breakdown, most occurred at around 60k though.

the lawsuit is regarding the SHO V8... wasn't the V6 used in the original SHO yamaha also?

More specifically, the lawsuit is that the cam sprocket slips on the camshaft. A common cheap way to prevent that is to weld the sprocket to the gear. That's what most SHO owners do, if their motor isn't blowed up yet.

GM can't build an engine it would seem. GM's latest and greatest IRL racing engine is built by FORD!! LOL..... :)

Yep the original V6 is actually completely designed and built by Yamaha, and it allegedly produced 300hp when delivered to Ford. But Ford decided to detune the engine (to 220hp) because of warranty concerns and stress to the drivetrain.

Btw the 3.4 Liter V8 in the SHO is based on the 2.5 Liter V6 (+2 cylinders) from the contour i believe.

It is my understanding as well that the SHO V8 is essentially a 2.5L Duratec with 2 extra cylinders. The 3.0L version of the same motor is also the basis of the Aston Martin 6.0L V12.

Chevy's new Optra and Epica models are built by Daewoo. I think I'd rather drive the Saturn Vue - at least the Honda engine is well proven.

well, i like FoMoCo, and I like GM. And I think ill be alright as long as neither of them are using parts made by Daimler-Chrysler, thats where I would have to draw the line.
