Gushing out gas!

Put fresh gas in the tank yesterday. Drove a friend around town and used about 30 miles worth of gas. Parked the car in the driveway. Came back outside a few minutes later to get the mail and could smell gas. The closer I got to the car I could hear this gurgling sound. Went over to the passenger side of the car and saw gas pouring out around the door. I opened the gas door and popped the gas cap off at which time fuel just came blowing out the nozzle! I really had no idea what to do. I let it do that for about 30 seconds before I realized it wasn't stopping and I sure as hell didn't want to lose all that gas so I put the gas cap back on which seem to slow it back down enough that it stopped altogether. So my question is this. What the hell could cause this? I know that this is a return style fuel system. I know that the fuel pump should shut off when the car is shut off. I'm not sure if this car has a vent solenoid or pressure solenoid in the EVAP system if there even is one. To my knowledge this has never happened before. I've never hung around my car after getting out of it to see if it does this.

I've never heard of this (or experienced it) but here are my first thoughts..

You must have an air bubble in there somewhere, that's pushing out the fuel.. I don't where the evap lines connect to the tank, but since it is "evaporative," I'll assume they are at the top where they aren't really in a position to put pressure "behind" the fuel..

That said, the tank really is kind of a "pancake," I suppose it could be possible that you have an air bubble on the far side of the tank? Particularly if you are parked with the driver's side of the car uphill.. Purely theoretical, but could you lift the passenger side of the car in order to coax the bubble to move to that side? Or wait till night when things are cooler, and drive it a bit...

Did you top it off while filling?
If yes.....don't.
Its hot as hell were you are, its not venting and its pushing the fuel out when you pull the cap.
Open cap and let the pressure out.
Disconnect the battery first.

Back to the top. Need help guys.
Surely it's still not gushing?!

I suppose if the evap solenoid stuck and/or the check valve or rollover valve stuck it could happen. Best thing to do would be to park it with the rear passenger side high and remove the cap. You were likely parked downhill, maybe level, maybe high on drivers side and the tank was too full from topping off.
