Hello All,
My power window and and lock switch caps are missing.
Thanks to i site member, i have replacement switches to install.

Is there a write up on removing the door panel to access the switches on the gen 2?

I think you can change them without removing the door panel. The part that their mounted to pops out, and you can work on them that way

Thank you Tony,
I read another post that said that the 93 to 96 (Gen i) window switches can be removed without removing the door pad. Not the 97 and 98 though.

If you still have the broken off caps, they can be (very carefully) super-glued back into place.

I've done this on two different cars now, with great success. first glue the chrome "ring" to the black "cap," then once dried, dab glue on the white "points" where the switch was previously adhered to the metal plate, and set it in place.

Works great.

I have both gen's, and sometimes I get confused, ok a lot. That's why I have books ha ha

Thank you all,
Mike,
I do not have the old caps. I have new switches. They were easier to find. How hard is it to take the caps off without breaking the clips on them?

Bummer. I'd guess it is impossible to replace the caps without breaking them.

The switches have 6-8 thin plastic "pins" on the back that slide through the holes in the top of the switch itself, and are then melted from the other side to keep them in place. They aren't really meant to be replaceable.

On the bright side, removing the door panels on these cars is not real difficult. If you've never done it before, they don't use the "mushroom" clips like the cars of yore. There are a series of "hooks" on the back that hold it in place instead. There are a couple screws to remove, then the whole panel lifts (gently) "up," about an inch, then "out." There should almost no resistance

I just found the following instructions for removing the door panel:
how does this look?
I could not match the listed part numbers to a diagram.

start quote:

Remove the inside door handle cup (22634) and disconnect the connector.

Disconnect the connector.

Remove the door trim panel attachment screw from the lamp bracket and the door.

Remove the seat regulator control (14776) from the front door trim panel and disconnect the connector.

Remove the outside rear view mirror control (17B676) from the front door trim panel and disconnect the connector.

Remove the fuel filler door switch from the front door trim panel and disconnect the connector.

Remove the luggage compartment remote control lock switch (19C542) from the front door trim panel and disconnect the connector.

Remove the attachment access door and the bolt.

Remove the front door trim panel.

Disengage the front door trim panel retention hooks from the inner door panel and lift the front door trim panel from the inner door panel.

Disconnect the speaker connector and main harness connector.

Looks about right.

I don't necessarily remember disconnecting all of the wires (in that order.) but the details look pretty good.

Do be careful with the cup behind the door handle, and the plastic "sail panel" right behind the mirror. They'll have plastic clips that will be brittle.

Hello All,
I just finished replacing my switches.

Here is my write up and warnings:

Remove door panel:

1) Remove the rear view mirror mounting hole cover. Push tab down from the top.

2) Remove the inside door handle cup and disconnect the connector. The tabs are on the top and the pegs on the sides are tight.

3) Remove the interior lamp cover then the module. be careful since the plastic is brittle. the metal tab is on the front.

4) Remove the door trim panel attachment screw from the lamp bracket and the door.

5) Remove the cover from under the door handle. Remove the bolt.

6) Now carefully lift strait UP using the handle. If you are not careful this is when you can break the tabs.

7) Now carefully undo all the connectors.

Replace the Switchs:

1) Pull up the felt. Take out the black door handle retaining bolts (7mm).

2) Remove the switches from the door handle by spreading the opening.

3) Put in the new switches and swap the connectors. be careful with the tabs.

4) put everything back. All done.
