Idle issues

Is there a way to adjust the idle on my 01? It shakes, sputters and stalls when it's cold out, only on cold starts. I believe it to be the o2 sensors but lack the funds to repair it the proper way for now.

Stop over :) I bought a new IACV for my Town Car, thinking it needed one. then the car fixed itself. I have the part, new in box.

You can try it for free. If it fixes the problem, we'll work something out. :D

I suspect in my case, the car had been sitting for some time before I bought it.

Spark plugs most likely will help.

You don't want to "change" the idle by raising it, but make it idle better.

Checked fuel pressure and injectors, put new plugs in and tried different coils. So spark and fuel are correct. I would like to try the IAC but I think my CEL code was an emissions problem. That's why I leaned toward O2's. I just need it semi working till my new garage is set up. Then narrow it down. What did you pay for that IAC?

Have you read the codes yet? (I've got a reader) You might be right on the o2 sensors. I don't think I've ever seen an IAC throw a code.

It looks like I paid $87.21 for the IAC, (Motorcraft) but it didn't come with the little paper gasket for some reason. so we'll either hope yours is good, or we can fabricate something.

Not since last year, I clear the code once and a while and it stays off for about 75 miles then comes back on. Still idles bad with no CEL

I know, it just doesn’t always throw out the CEL till about 75 miles after clearing it.

The code is P0430 Efficiency below Threshold, Bank 2.

Well after a few weeks I finally managed to get around to putting the new IAC in. Unfortunately when I start it up cold this morning she ran really rough and stall, so I am still stuck on a bad idle. Now what ?

I would try spark plugs. Cold starts require more ignition energy for proper spark.
I tried that a long time ago but it didn't have any affect on it. But I will do it again, I'm sure I have put 30,000 miles on it since then. Still leaning towards o2s, but it's not worth a 200 dollar guess. I think it might be time to bring to the dealer and have them run a computer scan check on it to see whats going on. Just hard to explain when when it only does it on cold starts.

My 486 dx2/66 was made by Daewoo.. pretty good li'll computer, actually. Of course I had to buy my own sound card and CD-Rom drive...

I've got my Town Car back now, so if you want we can get together one of these nights and swap stuff back and forth till we find it.. :)

I'm free tonight if you want to come over otherwise Friday night is free as well. I really don’t know what else to check.

Compression is good
Plugs & Coils are newer
Fuel pressure and Injector firing are good
No vacuum leaks
New IAC
O2's ???

The 2 down flow ones are just checkers correct? Can I get away with just changing the upstream ones for now?

Or a leak in the intake manifold, I suppose. I forget the symptoms of the plastic ones when they cracked...

i had an issue with that in a truck ..... once (cracked plastic intake) so i checked it when i had problems with my TC ..... turns out , what my issue was , there was a inch (or so) plastic pipe on the air cleaner plenum, coming out of the throttle body.... id almost call it a vacuum assisted transmission kickdown , except that is not what it is.... it just goes back into the block behind the firewall.... anyhow , the unseen end of this pipe had come loose and the car would barely run without it....unplugging the mat sensor from the air cleaner got it running well enough to get it to someone less old and fat than me....once that pipe was reseated , the car ran fine again.

once warmed up it runs well, a cracked intake is a good posability. I have 198,000 on her
