is my Lincoln dead?

Okay, 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII base.

To cut a long story short, went to walmart (mistake number 1). Car was driving perfectly. No noises, no shakes or rattles. Better than ever.

Get to walmart and when we got out smelled burning oil.

Did our shopping, got back in, started the car, and the low oil light comes on.

Check the oil, and none registering on the dipstick. Look under the car, and there is a puddle. Go back into walmart, buy some more oil, dumped in til it registered full again, started the car and it dumps out all the oil we just put in.

So how bad is it doc?

first thing would be to find where the oil is coming out, I suppose... If you're lucky, it could simply be a lose filter, or drain plug.

How's that for optimism. :D

More than likely, its the oil filter adapter gasket.

don't drive it!!!

Get under it and see were it leaks.
If its around the filter its the gasket.

If its on the front it could be the oil sensor.
Both easy fixes and common to happen on these cars.

Call AAA and flat bed it to your favorite place and get the car in the air for a thorough inspection, and repair. It's not going to be a fix to do lying in the middle of a Walmart parking lot. Be sure to turn the air ride off too.

okay i got the car home thanks to a loving uncle.

it looks like the leak is coming from between the oil filter and power steering pump.

Main thing is the car is home and I can start digging into it.

How difficult is this job to do? I will do a search, but if someone could point me towards a writeup, or maybe some pics, I would greatly appreciate it.

Pic for your viewing horror:

Likely the oil filter adapter gasket, but you need to spray copious amounts of brake cleaner over the entire area to clean it up and determine the cause of the leak.

Once you get it cleaned up real good, add a bit of oil and see where it leaks. You might get lucky and find out that it's the oil pressure sender or even the oil filter.

The adapter is held on by 4 bolts. Coolant flows through the large upper hole and oil through the two smaller lower holes.

i literally have $1 in my bank account and I don't get paid til the 9th.

Fortunantly, my mom loves me and picked up oil, filter, gasket, and coolant.

I didn't get the sensor but I can do that another day. For now, I just need to be able to drive since my Lincoln is my only source of transportation.

Mom's are great like that!

Edit: I would suggest, that when you get a few dollars available, that you buy some flowers or a card for your mom. That would be very nice.

Well I'm finding a few drops of oil under the front end of my 97 LSC, and this thread came to mind. I'm due for an oil change right now so I'm going to get this looked at - just in case.
