To be honest, I've never used one, but most seem to have one of those little 12v 7.5 AH Lead Acid batteries in them. I've always been suspicious as to whether or not they'd pack the oomph required to get the job done reliably.

When I went to the Boundary Waters for a week and was concerned about a voltage drain, I just brought my "spare" battery (1000 CCA) along in the trunk.. :D

I had one once but left out in the garage one winter. They all will work, some just hold a charge longer then others. Wouldn't mind getting another one since it's -14 out there and I know my TC is dead.

I just bought the cheap one at HF as well (the one that is a battery pack and light, nothing else, no compressor, no USB, nothing) and it is pretty nice. I added a monthly entry to my calendar to charge it overnight as that is why they usually fail, lack of charging. I found I use it to test things I am making for my car (12v from battery charger fluctuates too much depending on load, stand alone battery can't be brought in the house, etc) as well, and have ran an inverter and an LCD and movie box for many hours.

The phone reminder is a good idea, I just leave mine plugged in for now, but would like to keep it in my car.
