Thanks, I've heard the same from a couple of other folks! It's just that when the car ran it was strong and not worth scrapping and then crushing. I still want a 97 Thunderbird Limited Edition and if I can't find another one I can locate a decent-shaped regular 97 and turn it into an L.E. There's one not too far south of Toledo at a dealership with 87,000 miles on it, very clean, but they want $6000 for it! I contacted them via e-mail and told them it wasn't worth more than $4000 and they never responded! That was 2 months ago and it's still listed for their original asking price.

I still want another car to drive for the winter when the Mark is sleeping. The wife wants me in a small economical car. OK, I would go with a Focus but it would NEED to be a manual trans WITH 2 doors and A/C. They're out there but go for around $8500 to $15,000! On top of that I'm 6 foot 2 and don't fit comfortably in them but I can make it in. For around $5000 to just under $10K I can get into a 2000 to 2002 Lincoln Continental. But it has a V8 (wife doesn't want me in another V8), and it's front wheel drive, plus it's 4-doors. I'm not much of a fan of 4 doors. Opening the hood you can see the engine and it's sideways! But there's something about it that attracts me, perhaps it takes some design cues from the Mark? Dunno. In any case I'd need to wait to build up some cash to get something. But then, for about $3000 to $5000 I can fix up the Tbird to like-new.

Here are pics of a 2000 Continental in Toreador Red, the last year that color was used. The model ran to 2002. This clean example was sold last year but it shows what I'm thinking about.

  1. Wife doesn't want any money put in Tbird
  2. Wife wants you in a matchbox car
  3. Wife doesn't want you in a V8

What does she drive????

She drives a 2005 Ford Freestar Limited V6. I bought it for her on November 1st. It has power everything, including auto rear dual sliding doors and power liftgate, drop-down DVD player, AdvanceTrac, heated leather seats, etc. It replaced our 2001 Ford Windstar van. I picked it up with 35,000 miles on it for $12,500. I wanted her in a 2007 Lincoln MKX but it was about $8,000 more, plus it doesn't have the space we need for our 3 little girls.

This is an exact duplicate of our Freestar, right down to the aluminum wheels, and same two-tone color:

Just tell her to go drive her V6 and leave your V8's alone.:)

I don't get it, she has a newer car than you, and is telling you what you should drive?

I'm the one who chose the Freestar and paid for it.

The point is that she doesn't want me to spend any more money "in vain" on it, since I bought it in March 2001 with 59,000 miles on it, used it for 9 years and 100,000 miles more and she thinks it's time for me to move on and leave it behind. On top of that I have the Mark which is the same chassis, virtually the same color, just more refined. I still say that I would spend less money fixing up the Tbird than buying another car, even a Focus or a Continental.

Unfortunately I do not have the know-how nor the tools or a lift to change an engine, or remove the harder-to-reach items that I would want to take off of it should I decide to junk it.

Taking stuff off of a car you're going to junk is the best way to learn how to work on stuff.

You don't need a lift, just a good jack, a good set of jack stands, a garage, and some patience. A torch and a BFH help too.

I think she's right about dumping more money into the T-bird. It's not worth it. She's not right about wanting you to drive an econo-box. Go get yourself a nice (V8 powered) daily driver and be done with it. Do your research on the continentals, some years had a handful of problems that can be a real pain.

I thought of that, but I'd still want the Limited Edition emblems, wheels/tires, exhaust, lowering springs, shocks/struts, plug wires, etc.

Ok, screw it, I'll take $375 but I'm taking the Sony AM/FM Minidisc radio and the 4 speakers. Everything else stays. Goodbye Tbird, don't get your feathers ruffled, you were good to me.

$375 - the snow is going to start falling tomorrow Tuesday and I have no way to move it if my town is going to call a snow emergency for the snow plows to come.

I'm at 734-637-8596 (AT&T cell).

Had a long talk with my father-in-law yesterday about the Tbird, told him what happened when it "died". He says I have the classic symptoms of a hydrolock and suggests keeping it and either rebuilding the top part of the engine (heads) or even getting one from a junkyard to replace it (depending on condition of pistons, rods, rings). Neither of us have the know-how to do it though. The wife finally relented solely on the fact that replacing the engine would be cheaper than getting another car.

I called the Mexican guy I know and he said that for around $900 to $1300 he could find me a replacement engine and put it in.

Thoughts?

That sounds about right. Shop around for engines....they are pretty cheap. No need to go all crazy and rebuild it or whatever, just find a good used one and swap it out. Max and I were buying and selling cars for awhile and doing that. Worked out great.

Hate to disagree with you Gonzo, but it's far from just hydrolocked. You didn't introduce water to the engine, you let it all go out. This engine is dead, as in not worth rebuilding. Next time you see coolant spewing out, shut off the engine, and call a tow truck. It's less expensive that way ;)

Investing $1300 (it's never just that either) into this car with poor body condition is a bad decision IMO.

Scrap the shell for $350, bring the wheels over, and I'll put you in a nice low mileage mark viii for $2k.

I agree. When i was young i went the used engine route only to find out it burnt oil and had a bit of a valve tap. Unless you are getting a new crate engine with a warranty i would not bother. You don't know what you will be getting with that Mexican engine. Scrap it or part out what you can.

Lol...whats wrong with a Mexican engine! :)

All my swaps went on without a hitch. Not like his T-Bird is in super shape...so what if it burns oil, atleast it runs and he's not trying to give it away!

I dunno, years ago in Colorado, I knew of a "Mexican Speed Shop". Those guys knew there stuff.

I went there once (on a Sunday - the only place open) to get the rear crankshaft seal replaced in my 500 CID Cadillac.

Someone asked me if I trusted them to be able to do the work. While I was at their shop I noticed one of their "project Cars" was a VW beetle being converted to a front-engine/rear-wheel drive setup with a big block Ford. I said if they could pull that off, they should have no problem replacing a rear crank seal in my car. LOL :D

Congrats on the milestone and good luck on the next 100. I don't know how many miles my Mark had because I took out the odometer so I think I had 2 miles on my 96
