Hey, peoples. Here's a quick and hopefully easy question for y'all. For how many miles do you typically run Mobil One synthetic motor oil? 5k? 10k? I did mine back in May, about 4-5k miles ago, including the trip to MA, Carlisle, and back (~2200 highway miles). My oil life on the computer had run down to 5% recently; do you guys still go by that especially after so many highway miles on synthetic oil?

The best way to know how long to run your Mobil 1 is to get it analyzed by a laboratory. Blackstone Labs is such an outfit. LOD Members get a discount. They can tell you your motor's condition based on wear metals and how depleted the oil is. If you send samples regularly (once a year) they can watch the bearings and seals for you. They predicted bearing failure in our old 94 Continental months before it happened. They can also make recommendations on how long to run the oil.

When I was driving HOTLNC every day, I was doing 10K miles and the oil could have done even more.

I've read those threads since owning my Mazdaspeed6 and plan to send a sample in one of these days...

Analysis idea is an interesting one. I guess I always assumed work like that was not necessarily affordable. I'll have to check it out. I'm very curious what they would say about all three cars.. or the garden tractor. :D

As for oil change timing, I do run synthetic, and usually change it somewhere between 5 and 10k, depending upon where my ridiculously long road trips fall. I try not to ever cross the 10k line.

I do the blackstone analysis on my Mark, I didn't know that we get a discount being an LOD member!

I run Amosil 0w30. I ran it for 10k, and sent them in a sample, they said that everything looked great, and I could run the next change to 12k and then send it in. I did that, and they said everything still looked fine and to run the next change to 14k, which I'm 7k into now.

I do the analysis on all my cars, not on every oil change, depending on the cars use....the Mark is the only one I send in everytime, because I run it so long. The other cars don't get the Amsoil synthetic either.

Blackstone found coolant in my Taurus oil before I could tell I had a headgasket leak. It is just nice to see how the inside of your motor is doing, and how well your oil is holding up/how long you can run it.

In answer to your question, Mobil 1 is a good synthetic oil. I wouldn't take it out until at least 8-10k. I ignore my oil life monitor and just reset it whenever it pops up.

Thanks, Doug. A few weeks ago after it started to alert me at 5% life left, my fiancé borrowed the car so I could take hers in for service. I told her if she wants she can hit the reset button to make the oil alert go away. Guess which reset button she pressed.

The C5 Vette had extensive testing since it came with mobil 1 from the factory with the algorithm for the oil life monitor (OLM). It can go up to 15k miles or one year. I would do a cange once a year or when it got to 0%/ Even when i did HPDE the OLM would take that into consideration and lower the life %. The thing that degraded the OLM the most was short trips with cold starts.

With the Mark I just use 2 cycles of the OLM and that will get me one year between changes. I am approaching 150k miles now. U have been using mobil 1 and one year oil changes for about 10 years and 100k miles now.
