Modifying my Marks VIII

No way there is 50hp gain with cat back exh, an off the shelf chip, and a MAF. I hate to tell you guys but you are over estimating all these bolt on's.
People do your research. To get 50hp you will need at least longtubes and full exhaust, plus a chip. Dynotune will yield better results. MAF's are worthless on a stock car. Spend your money elsewhere.

Best bolt on mods for the money are:

#1 headers/exhasut
#2 convertor
#3 gears
#4 Intake

Take in to consideration this is comming from someone that own 4 mark VIII;s has tore them completely apart multiple times, and isntalled virtually every aftermarket part on to them; NOT someone trying to sell you stuff.

MAF and exhaust aren't going to make your car much faster.
??????????– With all due respect, this wasn't true with my car at all? My car went .3 faster in the quarter mile with just the addition of a cat-back exhaust. Maybe .3 isn't a lot for the mods sleeper is doing to his car? ;-) I went from 14.6 stock, to 14.3 with exhaust. No stock Mark VIII has gone faster than 14.6 (at least not on this web-site), so the .3 gain is as real as it gets.

As far as starting mods. I only have one mod on my car, at cat-back exhaust. I have owned my car for 7-years and put 147,500 miles on it. Again that exhaust gave me a .3 second improvement over the 1/4.

I have played with other 'mods' like MSD plug wires and K&N panel filter, but I don't really know if they did much. Copper plugs do make a difference though.

Good luck!

Ken
I have some and 14.5 stock time slips from Tristate raceway from last april that the red whore clocked off. 14.331 with jsut and intake two weeks later.

Nice times? What were the conditions, weather, humidity etc?

It does yield a 50 hp gross on a good running Mark VIII meaning good ignition, good fuel filter, fuel pump etc.

Off the shelf chip, I cannot get enough of this term, let's see the cars are IDENTICAL from 93-96 engine wise, part number wise as well as the 97-98's.

Why would the chip have to be any different if the cars are he same?

A cat back exhaust WILL NOT affect the program, the MAF we sell does NOT affect the program , yes you will get better results with our chip thrown into the mix of course but it will NOT hurt ANYTHING by running as a stand alone modification.

We have over 800 of them out there with a 1 or 2 reported problems, and these problems may have been caused by something else, like a fuel pump being down on power or a clogged fuel filter etc.
NEVER once did it blow an engine or make one run hot...etc.

So a chip designed and dynoed on a Gen 1 will not work with a car that has an exhaust and a maf? Off the shelf chip for an off the shelf car, sounds good to me.
If someone needs more then we will make them whatever they want program wise.

The headers along with our exhaust and no other mods yeilded 30 rear wheel HP and 15 ft/lbs torque.
We donated the car to Kooks headers for the header manufacturing so I know this for a fact and Kooks can be contacted for a fax of the dyno sheet.

Take into consideration that I own and Operate Lincolnmotorsport with 7 years experience with this particular platform day in and day out, along with owning over 11 Mark VIII's over those 7 years.

WOW!!! Is nobody else seeing this as a big deal? Did you post the details about this? I'd love to see the details of the time slip. I'm not doubting you at all, I'd just like to compare it to my stock 14.6 time slip. Did you run multiple 14.5's.

You have the fastest time for a stock Mark VIII over the entire existence of this board, the 'other' board, and carcus's board. 1,000's of users/Mark VIII owners that have passed through and you're the fastest!! AND you did it in a high mileage car!

Any chance you can start a whole new post just on those stock 14.5 runs?

btw - maybe you should have responded to the 'switch to windsor power' post when the guy stated that stock mark viii's only go 0-60 in 7.1 seconds? ;-)

You really did 14.5's bone stock {ken amazed}

So just out of curiousity: everyone is talking about headers for the mark 8-what does a good set of headers go for, for the mark?

The labor is what makes headers such an expensive mod for this car. ~$600 for just labor!!!

For these our Labor is $500.00 since they are so easy to do because they are RIGHT from the get go with ZERO hassles.

30hp is well worth it.
It's the single most hp gain from a bolt on (except NOS or Blower) that you can do to this car.

All I really have on my Mark right now is the MAF from LMS. I noticed a huge amount of difference in the top end. From 3k up, it feels like a different car. I have plans to do the exhaust soon, but am waiting for some stuff to come back before I do that. Also loking at replacing the gears, but I'm searching for a tracloc differential first. Will be replacing the plugs, t-stat, pullies pretty soon. J-mod in May. I plan to do headers, but probably not 'til next year. What other stuff should I look at doing when I replace the headers.

Also, our local club has a dyno tune coming up in a few months, so I will be getting in on that.

RE: Modifying my Mark VIII

Hello All, Long time no post......I thought I would jump into the mix here.

Question's:
1. Steeda Underdrive pulley's worth it or not if my car is a daily driver? (Use all or some of them?)
2. Steeda Timing adjuster....worth it? Pros vs. cons? HP gains?
3. New MAF w/K&N filter? Worth it?
4. Should I do all three?

I have an oportunity to buy all 3 of these at a good used price (cheap) from a Mustang GT co-worker and I wanted to make sure these are good/safe mods. to the 97 Mark LSC???

Mods. so far: 1. X-Pipe (3rd cat gone) 2. SS Magna Flow Mufflers. 3. LMS Chip (Not installed yet) soon to be put in!

Any advice would be great!!

Thanks, Joe
