My 98 Will NOT Pass Emissions, Sec. Air Pump

I am not able to pass NC state emissions because of my sec. air pump. I have reset the code drove it a few cycles, CEL light still off, but failed test because I did not simulate real driving conditions and the machine also can tell I reset the code?

I am out of work at this time, the costs to repair is way too expensive, so I turned in the plate and the car sits.

Any options/suggestions would be appreciated...

TIA

If the CEL light is off, you just need to drive it a bit more so the readiness test can complete.

Check the fuses under the hood on the drivers side. It's fuse #3, a 10A. Mine had blown when my alternator was acting up. In fact, it was the alternator that caused a number of problems at that time. It took me 2 NEW alternators to get a good one.

Did they give you the specific error code or tell you what needs to be done? Does it say "not ready", or something else? They should have at least given you a printout of what failed.

I tried to do this several times, but the CEL light comes on before the readiness test can be completed. Bad timing, I guess.

Can a chip programmer omit the sec. air pump check?

Thanks,

It was more like a not ready status because I am trying to trick the code. The code is for the sec. air pump, I reset it, but am not able to drive enough to reset the learning tables before the same CEL light comes on.

Not surprising, as the AIR system is part of the readiness test.

Yes, the AIR system can be turned off in the tune.

That pump coming on for the few minutes (seconds?) it does come on is rather senseless anyway.

A custom SCT tune for sure, others probably.

I'd agree.
I too agree, cheaper to fix the issue.

now if you already had the tuning software, it might be a different story.

but to spend a grand or more to stop a check engine light?

nah.. just fix the problem itself.

I was under the wrong impression that the Mark just used an E-prom chip
($125) like my other cars that are OBD-1. I now see that this is a reprogram (OBD-2), but never thought that it would be that much $$$ to do.

Thank to all for your input!

I have air pumps for just this such occasion. Let me know if you need one.
A friend of mine who knows I am not working and strapped for cash, told me to drop my car off at his place for a couple of days and he knows a guy who can get it to pass. I did not ask questions on how since it is free. I assume he is going to swap one out, but really not sure...
I am a firm believer in fixing the problem, but in this case, I will have at least a year to worry about it :)

Thanks again,

Jeff

OBD-II cars can also use a chip, although flashing the PCM is preferred, but you'd still have to get someone to program it, and that also costs money.
