My Capri

Hi everyone,

I was reading this morning and I noticed a thread area of non Lincoln cars and thought I would post here.

Jeremi was instramental ibn getting this car to me last year. The story is I had this exact car when I was 16 in 1981, drove the hell out of it and killed it and I was very upset about that and have always wanted another one. Occasionaly I would look around but never did see anything until about 18 months ago I found this car in Texas for sale before it was completely turned into a track car. I think I saved her from a horrible ending. A previous poster her on LOD in Texas, LaserSVT was kind enough to go look at the car for me and deem it to be a worthy candidate and place the deposit for me after the deal was worked out. He then took delivery of the car for me and stored it for a few months until I was ready. Jeremi then arranged for the car to be shipped to him and I drove from Toronto to Jeremis place with a trailer and picked the car up and completing all the import paper work into Canada.

I plan to keep it as a Sunday driver and make it a clean fun car. I had to get it out of Js hands as he had the tape measure out for a 4.6 DOHC swap with a manual. He said that it would fit!!

So here she is and I will update as I get to it which will be a slow process.

This is a picture taken in Texas at the previous owners house.

Aah, the famous Capri! I've met your bumpers, but I think you were out of town. At least from the side, it does look pretty sharp without them, too.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one progress. Particularly when you cave and go for the 4.6 swap. :D

Cool! Are you going to do a complete restoration? Correct me if I'm wrong but they share the same platform as the mustang right?

Very nice Capri you have there (at first thought, I was expecting a Fox Capri!). Keep us up on her transformation and upgrade. These early Capris aren't exactly common (here in the States anyway).

Thanks guys for all the replies.

I am not going to do a full restoration as of now but preserve the 40 year patina, make the car safe to drive on the road for cruise nights and Sundays so to speak. Since the car has been motor swapped and it is not really worth anything to anyone but me I do not see a restoration in it's future. I just wanted a car I could jump in and go for a drive thinking back to my teen years while doing it.

You think they are not common in the States, you should try Canada. These cars up here have been dust for 20 years already. Parts are non-existant here in Canada and everything is coming from either the USA (Team Blitz in Ohio) or from the UK. Shipping is a bitch. Since I have been back into the Capris, I have connected with quuite a few owners in the US and there are a few but not a lot.

Here is a shot of the car in front of LaserSVTs shop in Waco Texas before it was shipped to Jeremi for me to pick up, notice no front seats as I had the owner keep the racing seats and roll bar from the car.

Here is another picture showing dash and interior

So now I have to ask.. What did you do for seats??

Never mind. I already know. There's really only one solution.. :D

Very funny..HAHA!!!

I managed to find a set of tan from seats from a 1973 and complete set of black seats from a 1973 as well. Construction of the seats from 1971 to 1974 I think were basicly the same. The only difference is from 1973 and up the pleats for lack of a better description are horizontal where as the early seats are verticle. The seats I have are for sitting purposes only and therefore I can at least drive the car even if the seats do not look good. I also managed to get a set of seat tracks here in Canada as well from a guy I met through a classified for sale website who has two Capris and a parts car. The tracks that were sent with the car were wrong and of no use to me, I think they were from a 1976 or later car.

Nice. So are you going tan? or black? I've historically been a "black black and more black" interior fan, but the tan in my current Mark has grown on me significantly. Against the red, I think it'd be a tough call. I could see either looking really sharp.

I am going Black when I do the new seat covers. I can get all new covers for the seat as they are available just pricey but not so bad really for what you get. I am going to have to do some foam work as it is 40 years old and brittle and I have to change the "pleatts from horizontal to verticle so I am period correct.
Here is another pic that shows the racing seat that was in it, there was no way my butt was going to fit

And another with the roll bar that was removed, too bad he cut the seats to install

That is a shame.. those back seats look really good, otherwise. Do I see some kind of trim missing inside the back, left window also? Although the fit and finish on my '72 Jeep is even more crude than that, so it may have just been normal for the time.. :)

That is cool!
Buddy of mine had one back in the day, glad it all came together for you.

Bill is good people, same with Jeremi.
4.6 swap would be cool!

No the trim is missing and I will get one to replace it and the other side. So many small pieces missing but hey there is no fun in getting a car finished!!

The seats are good from afar but far from good. If you look at the uppers, you will see that the top panel has been covered over to conceal the dry/sun rotted material. They did a good job to make it look good but that is all.

I can't wait to get going on this car. It is 40 miles away from me as I am clearing out my garage at home and getting it sealed up for winter so I can at least walk outside to the garage and work on the car. I hate waiting for the weekends and then driving for an hour to get to work on it.

I did see something funny up there, but decided it was "normal.." :) Either way, it does look like it will be a good winter project car for you. Good luck with your garage product. I hope you've got a good heater out there!
