My Car Died

I was driving my Audi to Atlanta last Friday and my oil light came on and huge plumes of white smoke started coming out the back. I pulled off the dide of the interstate and called AAA to have my car towed back to Birmingham to the dealership to be checked out. At least I had AAA and the tow was free.

I received a call from the dealership yesterday and they told me both turbo's were shot and would have to be replaced at a cost of $6000. This seems kind of steep to me so I'm not going to have it repaired. I don't know what this means for my car is it now junk? I looked at turbo's on the internet and they run from $1000 - $2000 for the pair so is there that much labor involved? How involved are putting turbo's on?

The Audi has been a great car and this is the first problem I've had with it. Any opinions?

I had been losing oil for a short period of time. It looked like it was coming from the valve cover gaskets on both sides so I had that repaired so I guess it was both turbo's at once.

If the turbo's are oil-cooled, and the oil line to the turbo's blew out....

Sounds possible to me, but I'm just guessing. I don't know anything about Audi's.

What kind of Audi is it?

Wow, a quick google search shows an unusual amount of turbo failures for the A6.

I only have experience with Ford Powerstroke turbos and the fact they got quite expensive to maintain and repair. It wouldn't take a lot of dealership labor to start to add up quickly - I would easily imagine the same is true for Audi.

The real problem is the residual value of the car in its current condition just plummeted, likely more than the repair costs. You are going to have to weigh the difference and decide the best course of action from a financial standpoint. Worst case would be salvage value for the car as is vs. shelling out $6K to get back to the trade-in cost value.

What year and mileage?

My car is an 02 with 131k. It has been expensive to maintain. A brake job alone cost me about $900.

why bother with the dealer, check with an independent mechanic for a 2nd opinion
I have a good mechanic I use but it will require another tow but it will be worth it. He has done some work on myr Fiance's car and is very reasonable.

give him a call first to let him know what is going on. AAA may give you another tow

EDIT: Fiance's car :err-what?:

If you have AAA... just push the car across or down the street... as long as the pick up point is a different address then the last drop off point, you're good :D

Is there an Audi forum you can sniff around and see what other guys have done who had/have this same problem?

I have been on the Audi forums for a while but they aren't the same quality of people here. I have asked several questions over there and sometimes I don't even get a response but I will try again.

I posted my Audi problem on the Audi forums 2 days ago and I have not gotten one response from them. Thank goodness for this site. Even though you don't know about Audi's you gave me comments and I appreciate it. You guys are great!!

When i had the Acura, i posted on one of their big forums, one reply or no reply. I found a nice forum for the FLEX. I guess like this site when you are not driving what everyone else is driving you have a passion for your car(s).
