My car just left me stranded on the way to work. It's sitting in a parking lot as we speak. The alternator went again. The same signs I had last time. check charging system msg,ac on and off, and finnanly the car died in the parking lot. The car has a napa alternator on it with a lifetime warranty that I put on 8 mos ago for this same reason. so there's no problem getting another one but what the hell is killing my alternator?? The first time it did it I thought it was the battery and replaced that and of course it wasn't that. Put the meter on it and it's not charging. Yes I do have an asp crank pulley on it and I've added a stereo system but the first time it did this the car was bascially stock. Any advice please!! Also if I decide to go with the cobra upgrade alt (130amp) how much are they?,do they bolt right up? what's the part #? etc,etc

I did some searching in the archives and stuff and it just seems to be a well documented problem with reman. alternators. I'm gonna go with the cobra upgrade and also get the one from napa as a spare since it has a lifetime warranty. what's the part # for the cobra alt. and do you have to do the soddering for the wires to reach?

Crap dude. I was stranded on the way to work also. Same damn thing and I've gone through the same ##### as you. I replaced the alt. just a month ago and already it's dead. My car is sitting half a mile from my work in a parking lot and Ive been stranded.

Here's the thing though. I was going to put a new battery in the car as I thought it was the battery. If it is the alt. and not the battery then I might have more trouble than you with replacing the alt. I bought the alt. from Orielly and it's just the stock alt. It comes with a limited lifetime warrenty but I'm not sure if I can get money back for the alternator and if not then I'm dumping 230 bucks down the drain which I can't afford to do. I'd rather just get another alt and keep changing them out. I know that sounds stupid but I just don't have the freaking money to dump on a badly made product.

Where can I find one of these cobra alt quickly. I have a trip on wed and need the car working by then?

This sucks huh?

Your post has convinced me it's the alt. The battery kept its 12.2 cahrge while running when I first replaced the alternator so I'm pretty sure it's not the battery, Also like you I have two amps pulling from the battery for the soundsystem. Inceidently my other problem is all the speakers are presently not working for some reason. The other day the base started going out at low rpm and then once I parked it the next time I started it up none of the speakers were working. :( ARGGGGGG

After work I went back to my car. Started it up. Drove it home without any problems.

Must have been the clogged cats. It was 98degrees today and I was in stopped traffic for 30 minutes. I guess I need to punch out my cats.

I'm lost on this one.

Just got back from the Mechanic Shop. I'm friends with em since I've been going there so long and at times they do simple ##### for me for free. Anyway, after telling them that I tested the battery with a V. mater and the battery read 12.5v while car was off and 15v while car was on they decided to do a test themselves. They ran one of those high faluutin handheld computer thingamabobs on the battery and it said the battery, alternator, and starter were all good.

I have my car on ramps right now to punch out the cats. That's what it has to be.

Anyway,, Dennis have you had problems with the cats? If your electrical is not dying (without the car dying) then it's not your alt. and is something else. (although I'm sure dennis knows more about this than I do) :)

It's definitely the alternator. It was the same problem before. The alternator isn't charging. I'm on my way to napa in the morning to get another one(lifetime warranty) and then I will get the cobra one and have the napa one as a spare. Good luck with yours.

I am curently on my third NAPA lifetime warranty alternator in the last 5 months. I don't know if they are crap, or I have just received marginal ones, but I will be purchasing a new, not rebuilt one if this one dies.

I just replaced the alternator and it's charging fine. Don't know for how long though.(LOL) I will be buying the cobra uprade this weekend and will install that and put the napa one on the shelf just in case.

Remember that the battery must be fully charged when putting a new alternator on, or you'll cook the alt!

I'm back to replacing the alt. which I will do tonight. :(

I'm suspicious of my fuel pump causing some problems though.

Ohh well.. it's warrentied so I might as well go and do it.
