I recently did the ignition timing on the bike, it was different than I was used to with a timing light.
You put a dial indicator in the spark plug hole, find top dead center, then back it up to .080" before the top dead center, and adjust the ignition timing plates so the points open there.
It's easy to check, you put the spark plug on its wire, and rotate the engine, until you see the spark at that piston position.
I love this simple mechanical stuff.
