what's the first thing a car guy does after getting out of the hospital? change his spark plugs. I think you guys for thinking of me while in the hospital. I started to feel better the other day got better yesterday and out this morning I had been putting off changing the plugs since I bought the car and I was feeling the effects of tired plugs. the carfax on this car had a full service report since it was a factory Ford fleet vehicle until 2012. and then owned by a fort Mechanic from the dealer. there was a spark plug changein 2011 according to the list. I picked up a set of Autolite XP104racing plugs which are iridium and feature a cut back electrode for better spark for combustion. while I was there gentleman has 92 mark 7 in excellent condition with a built 5.0 motor bullet rims and Cobra breaks with drilled and slotted rotors. a really nice car.

on the drivers side of the car for easier access there are two 10 millimeter bolts holding the solenoid just above the valve cover to remove and then to 10 millimeter bolts for the plug cover. I opened the package make sure to check the proper gap on the plugs. 054and six of the eight were right on with 2 at. 050 so always remember to check your gaps.the passenger side obviously must remove the air inlet tube for access to the plug cover and remember to unplug CIAT sensor and PCV if you can't swing it out of the way. inspection of the plugs showed age and minimal carbon deposits about exactly as I expected. as I said the XP 104 racing plug from Autolite features a back cut electrode to expose the spark for better performance and after driving I definitely feel a difference as the plugs we're definitely going as the throttle response now is very crisp I would dare to say better than the Motorcraft plugs that I removed.

Welcome back!

I'll have to take a look at those plugs. I changed mine the first time at 125k. I'm somewhere around 235k now.. It's almost due.. :D

If yours are iridium I'd say they are about due, I think they claim 120 k miles?:)

I put platinum plugs in the CE, when it had 140k miles, they should last to about 240k.

I'll add those to the "spring maintenance" list now..

Omgz! I'm surprised nobody has mentioned AL 764's. Aren't those gods gift to the Mark viii?

It's nice to see people that understand spending the extra $2-3 more per plug is worth it compared to the hassle of changing out plugs every 20k miles.

changing plugs once every two years (i drove about 10k a year) is a hassle?
news to me...
plus, i pulled my set of 764s at like 30k plus miles and they still looked great. so, idk...

there is nothing wrong with the 764. the AP 104 is developed for racing according to their website and their feature along with iridium is the cut back electrode which ends directly above the diode at the center of the plug therefore exposing the spark directly to the combustion chamber. this has been a practice of those people off the mainstream Mechanic root 4 years. I personally haven't used the 764 but I can tell you these made a difference that you can feel.

I think so, especially with our threads, or lack there of. I'd much rather put in a plug for a couple bucks extra that will likely last the life of the vehicle with less risk of damaging the head from changing them more than necessary.

I agree, especially since I drive 4 mark VIII's (and one MG) I've got enough other maintenance to keep me busy. :D
