Odometer issue...

Hi Folks, I have a curious question that I wasn't quite sure where to ask at, but thought that this might be the right place. The odometer has quit working on my 93 Mark VIII and the traction control button stays off. I was told that the wheel speed sensor could be the problem and might just need to be cleaned. This is something I have never dealt with before so I thought I might ask before I started in on anything.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Are the wheel speed sensors easy to access?

Thank you in advance for any help with this issue. I appreciate it.

i don't believe those 2 systems have much overlap.
does the speedometer still work? the speedo and odo are run by the vss signal from the tailshaft housing.
if the speedo works, i would suspect some part of the gauge cluster is bad.

if the light is on, the TC system has stored a code and they can be pulled. i will find the procedure for you. it involves a paper clip and counting flashes.

ABS Data Link Connctor (C170) viewed from pin face:

L = Warning lamp to dash

G = Ground

T = Trigger

To pull codes, use a paperclip to jumper the ground and trigger pins together.
Turn ignition key to RUN without starting engine.
Count ABS light flashes to get two-digit code. Each code takes about 15 seconds if there are mulitple codes.

Yes, the gen 1 odometer does not use the ABS sensors. The odometer on my green Mark VIII stopped working years ago, the ABS is fine.

Sounds like I have a couple more projects then. Thank you for the information. Is the Data link under the hood or inside the car?

The speedometer is working just the odometer is not and I don't have any ABS lights on just the traction control button in front of the shifter always says on and doesn't do anything different when I push it.

I know you guys probably don't need that description but this car is all new to me, I have always had GM and Chrysler products and found that I really like this car so I am trying to learn as much about it as possible and converting myself over to a Ford/Lincoln person :p

I know I need to purchase an owners manual and a service manual for this car but haven't had the money yet to do so. Usually I've been lucky with my other cars and have been able to find them online to view, but haven't found this one yet.

Thank you again for your help.

the ABS code connector is under the hood next to one of the headlights i believe. it will be red.

and the ABS light may be burnt out or removed. the TC and ABS system are one, and the TC dies if the ABS dies.

I got quite a few codes, looked them up and I'm not sure if they make sense because a couple of the codes come up with the same issue. So here are my Codes and what I found. I'm not sure what some of them mean but I am assuming a few of them are telling me I need to replace sensors.

17 - Reference Voltage Problem (Have no Idea what that could mean specifically)
31 - Left Front Wheel Sensor (Assuming that means it needs to be replaced?)
32 - Right Front Wheel Sensor (Assuming this needs to be replaced as well?)
35 - Left Front Wheel Sensor Erratic Output (?)
63 - Pump Motor Speed Sensor (?)
75 - Left Front Wheel Sensor Erratic Output (?)

One of the things that makes me wonder if I have the right meanings for the numbers is that 35 and 75 say the same thing... Thank you again for all your help here, I actually feel like I'm starting to get somewhere now with the help

I cleaned everything in there on both side but it's still doing the same thing... Is there something I'm suppose to do to reset the system after or anything like that? Also, I've read that the sensors have a plastic cover over them? If that's the case then mine are kissing on both sides, but I don't know if that's the case or not and I haven't been able to find a good picture of the front sensors yet... Thank you for the help

May be a long shot, but I would suspect something amiss with a harness connection? I would disconnect, clean, lubricate (with dielectric grease) and reconnect any connections specific to the ABS, in particular the large connector at the ABS module (should be located inside the drivers side fender well behind the inner fender liner).

Ok, thank you, I will give that a shot and see what happens. I won't be able to get into the garage until the weekend but as soon as I able to I will let you know how it goes... Thanks again

Disconnected the wires and cleaned them up over the weekend, unfortunately no change until today. I just went to take a ride up the road and when I started the car, the ABS light was off and the Traction Assist button was working. However this only lasted until I got out of my driveway and then the ABS light came back on and the Traction Assist button said off. When I went to come home, it did the same thing, everything was working properly until I got out of the driveway and then went back to no working again.

When I was checking the connections, I noticed that the wire to the sensor on the front driver side had a couple cracks in the insulation. I taped them up, but could that be something that would cause an issue like this? Or maybe I just didn't get a connection back properly when I finished cleaning? All things I will check this weekend most likely but thought id bounce the ideas off you folks... Thanks again.

Hmm.. I would think it sounds like a grounding issue? You need to get your hands on an Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual and trace the ground circuits and locate where they are attached to the car. Remove, clean and reattach. It may even be as simple as replacing the battery ground wire to the engine block? Over time the ground wire starts to corrode internally wreaking havoc on circuit operation. The ground path may be taking the long way home through another circuit.

I suppose there's always the possibility of the ABS module going bad.

As for cracks in the outer jacket of the sensor harness, I doubt it would affect the operation unless it has allowed severe internal corrosion of the shielding? I have known them to be spliced (not recommended) and still function.

Here's a good general reference... http://www.hella.com/ePaper/Sensoren/Raddrehzahlsensoren_EN/document.pdf

Thank you for this document... I am sure that I will find this useful for more than just finding this issue as well... unfortunately I have to take a break from finding this problem now to work on my new issue. I hit a deer last night with it so my new project is getting new headlights, turn signals and grill along with the chrome trim replaced. Love this car so it has to be done so I can get back to the ABS lol... thank you again, I will post more about what I learn about the ABS as soon as I'm able to get back to it...

I can pdf you some diagrams from alldatapro if you need them. Just let me know what you need.
Thank you for this offer. Just out of curiosity, would that give you a parts diagram of the front end of the car? I am trying to find some replacement parts since I hit a deer with it and I'm not sure what a couple parts are actually called. The chrome piece that goes across above the headlights and grill is all bent up but I'm not sure what exactly that's called to ask for when I call places. Thank you again, I appreciate it.

quick question: your car's ABS system goes through a calibration when first starting the car. It waits until you have (by factory spec) reached 17 mph....many people have asked me through the years "what is that quick growling noise I hear when first driving away?"

it is like a little muffled growl coming from the front...sometimes it sounds like it comes from the brake pedal at the firewall. THAT is the ABS calibration for speed.

Do you hear this noise when you start driving?

I've also seen people shear the speed sensor wire by turning the steering wheel full lock while car is in the air and the suspension hanging since the speed sensor wire is clipped in to a bracket near the steering knuckle.

If you shear the copper tone wire, you will have fault codes, ABS light and no traction control.
You wont know you sheared the copper tone wire though as it is inside a insulator/housing.

No I don't hear anything when I take off with it. I cant think of the specific wire that you are mentioning but I will take a look in there this weekend when I can get into the garage again. Is it hard to get to and replace?

Thank you for that information, gives me something else to think about.

its the small insulated wire that clips to a tab on the steering knuckle and leads down to the front hub area. The way it clips on to the tab is there is a little rubber grommet that slides in to a C-shaped tab location on the spindle...follow it from the hub where it attaches with a small bolt, pull it away from the c-clip on the knuckle and follow it inside the wheel well for the connector.

thank you for explaining that to me... I didn't end up being able to work on it this weekend do to some other unexpected personal issues but I will hopefully get a chance during the week to check it out. Thank you again
