So what is that extension on the side of the oil pan that blocks the starter? Can I get a regular oil pan off a 4.6 crown vic?

It holds extra oil required to properly lube all those extra valves on top of the engine.

So although you could put a regular pan under there, I can't really recommend it. :) You definitely want that extra oil in the system..

more pan capacity because the 4v oil pump has more lash adjusters and cams to feed.
you can run a bird/cougar pan but you will lose some capacity.
side note, somewhere around 96, Marks got a "4v oil pump", previous years had a "2v oil pump". 4v one is thicker, more flow because 4 cams.
i used a "3v oil pump" which has even more flow, because cam phasers.

You want/need more oil capacity for all the reasons stated. I've always run at least 1/2 quart extra because running high rpms in the DOHC motors leaves more oil up in the heads.

Yep, the 3 valve pump with billet gears is today's high performance oil pump.

I run a GT500 oil pump in my 3V Mustang got it through FRPP I'm sure in fits a Mark.
Ditto what everyone is saying on the oil pan. Bad idea to go with one that has less capacity.
