P0302 and P0720 killing me

1996 base model. When I got it last May it was throwing the 2 codes mentioned. I replaced the coil pack, plugs and the #2 injector. Checked resistance on the # 2 plug wire and it was good as well. I also cleaned the passenger side injectors while the rail was off. I just got done replacing the output speed sensor per the P0720 code. From what I've read the resistance on it is supposed to be 450-1250 ohms. My old one was reading 223, problem is the new read the same right out of the package. I installed the new one anyway and repaired the wires going to the plug. Drive the car and it still throws the P0302 but not the P0720.....but the OD light is still flashing. Cleared them and drove it some more...OD still flashes but it won't throw the code. I have a new crankshaft position sensor as well not installed yet. I'm losing patience here and hate throwing parts at something

Any suggestions?

You can test your speed sensor with a DVOM...

Not sure on the '96 but from what I remember, a flashing OD light generally indicates a solenoid problem in the transmission?

If you're still getting a misfire code, I would suspect the plug wire(s) (even if it did pass the ohm test). You can swap coils/wires/plugs and see if the misfire stays with the cylinder or the part.

If the car starts and runs, you don't need the crank sensor replaced.

Guess I need to do a solenoid service pack and jmod while I'm in there. 1-2 accumulator as well as the jmod or just jmod?

od light:

flashing OD is usually an overheat condition.
either actual, or just perceived by the temp sensor.
log trans temp to confirm.
if its not that, possibly solenoid pack or tcc solenoid.
but those should throw codes.
try a different scanner, maybe make friends with a local shop owner with a snap on scan tool.

oss:

i had an oss go bad. read perfect except at about 85 mph the trans would slam into OD and cut power.
when i logged the OSS reading, it looked good until 85, then the readings would get way out of hand.
pulled the old one off a spare trans and i was good to go.

Seeing how the light will start flashing in less than a half mile of driving from a dead cold start then "perceived" is all it could be.

How bizzare. I swapped #2 & #4 plug wires and went for a drive. Misfire code is gone and won't come back. Took 3-4 miles for od light to start flashing again but my reader won't pull anything concerning it now. With the misfire gone there is no more strong Fuel odor and damn does she haul the mail. Maybe #2 wire just wasn't seating. I swapped them back and misfire still not returning.

Do you use dielectric grease on electrical contacts (in particular the plug wires)?

Let's hope the misfire stays gone.

Yes on the grease. Misfire is staying away. Went ahead and ordered EPC, TCC and dual shift solenoids. Guy at FTE says replacing all 3 still may not fix it, guess I'll find out. Going to jmod as well while I'm in there.

Which code reader are you using?
I have both a vgate and my xcal 3 tuner and only the xcal has the ability to pull trans and deeper codes. For example one morning i was coming to school and my car said "check transmission" and the light began blinking. My vgate showed the car clean minus a few inconsistencies in data logging but my xcal gave me a few for the anti theft, runners, and my trans temp sensor, ended up just being moisture getting into the harness.

About that misfire does your car use cop boots or plug wires? 96 was an odd year so im not sure

All I have for codes is the bluetooth deal that works with the Torque app. I still have plug wires.
Youre gonna need a different scanner. Autozones or o reillys might be good enough to pull trans codes.
The torque has its advantages, it was able to pull codes off a mini when the $200 store one couldnt.

Maybe coil packs and firing order for the plug wires?

I really think plug wire #2 wasn't properly seated. I swapped wire 2 with wire 4 and got no misfire. Swapped the wires back and still no misfire so I'm good there. I hate throwing parts at stuff but I'm going to replace the EPC, TCC and shift solenoids, possibly the temp sensor as well and hope it solves the flashing OD light. I've got a 13 row trans cooler off of my F250 from when I upgraded it to 6.0 Powerstroke cooler. Will likely throw that on too when we go into the trans.

Fortunately the local trans shop will scan it for free. Dropped it off today, should hear from them tomorrow.

FML.....transmission shop drove the car, light flashed but, get this, no codes registered. He suggested starting with the neutral safety switch. None of my research about this ever mentioned the NSS. Now what, take it to another shop or throw what parts I have at it and hope?

Called the dealership to ask about diagnostic fee on the trans. $130.00....So is there a 130.00 scanner available that will read the codes I'm seeking? I tried Forscan Lite app, no deal, Fordsys app, no deal, Torque Pro, no deal. I'd rather buy a scanner that will do it if one can be had for dealer diagnostic cost.

Suggestions?

I bought an Innova 3040D scanner. It isn't telling me any more than the Torque app did. The P0720 code is still there (Torque was already telling me this) even though I installed a new output speed sensor and the OD light continues to flash and shifting remains erratic. Not once has my speedometer quit working though and I thought a faulty OSS would cause that? I'm thinking I may have gotten a bad one. The old one showed 223 ohms of resistance, supposed to 450-750 I've read. Well the new one ohms the exact same.????? Maybe I can take my meter to the parts house and check another new before I buy it.

Just got back from the parts counter. A new OSS had the same reading, 228 out of the box. I'm at my wits end here.
