Plunger-type switch under the hood?

Ok guys; what is the plunger-type switch looking thing (passenger side front underhood close to the air box) under the hood and what does it do? I see it is a two-wire and is connected/routed in with the MAF wiring. It looks like it could be an underhood service light switch, except there is no underhood service light on the MKVIIIs.

It is part of the anti-theft system. If the hood is tampered/opened while the vehicle is locked, it will trigger the alarm system.

JP, once again you are my Role model! Thanks for the description, and now that I know what it is, I may just snatch up another one (with a good length of pigtail) and make an underhood service light switch out of it!

You can just buy a hood light from a junk yard Gen 1, I think they use an internal mercury switch. :)

I had an 89 cutless supreme that had an under hood light that had a 15 foot retractable cord to use on other things. I keep looking for one to put in the Mark. That was one thing GM got right.

All of the Gen-1s I find around here son't have the light.

I am going to make my own from some 12V LED SMD strips I have, along with some of the clear plexiglass.

every Gen 1 I have popped the hood open on had one. Does it illuminate a whole lot? no...maybe enough light to find the oil dip stick but certainly not enough to find the tube when putting the stick back.

Many of my old cars had a service light on a long wire...the best I remember was my old 1978 Datsun 280Z. It would reach the rear tires in the case of a flat.

haha yep, my 1988 silverado pickup truck had one of those opposite side of the battery. I always thought that was the coolest thing. Handy as heck too when you remembered it was there. haa
