my comp is finally pop-up free no matter what. No-adware, spyboot, lavasoft didn't fix it for me, but the simple wordpad did !!!

If your'e using
Windows 95/98/Me go to c:\windows\hosts
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro go to c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows XP Home go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and find file called 'hosts' no extensions. Edit it in Wordpad and paste the following list of restricted sites from here: http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/serverlist.php?hostformat=hosts&showintro=0

This guy does awesome work. The list gets updated very frequently, so just copy and paste it if a pop-ups appear again after a while.

I may need to try that. My son gave me the url of a hack site (don't ask), and when the site popped up, so did ten thousand pop ups. LOL! Most are gone but I still have a persistent spyware hid somewhere.

It actually works too good. I had to hash (#) some websites, especially yahoo related. No pictures would show. If something like that occurs, just check the source of the pic, find it in that file, and hash it. Reload the page !!

This is one of the single most informative posts I have found in a long time. Thanks!

By the way some of you may not be aware of this, but one source of POP UPS is the Messenger Service which is on by default in the Windows OS. If you disable this service it will eliminate one source.

Yeah, the messenger is a problem too, but now there are different, better methods of pushing pop-ups on your comp by the advertisers.

I just did edited my file as well. I hope this works.
I have felt like the Karate Kid lately with pop ups, "click on, click off, click on click off."
